The most spoken languages in Australia

Australia remains predominantly English speaking, despite having more than 300 languages used across the country. However, more than a fifth of Australians speak a language other than English at home, according to data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Tuesday. Work and travel? 10 pros and cons of freelancing on the road

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

While Sarah and I managed to accumulate a small pile of cash from selling everything we owned before leaving on our nomadic adventure, we knew we were going to have to work and travel if we wanted to do this for the long haul. Not only did we need to cover our travel expenses, but we also had two mortgages to service, and the rental income didn’t cover the repayments. When we got to Thailand, about five weeks into our trip, I managed to get a job teaching English in Chiang Mai. It was only 16 hours a week which gave me plenty of time to explore the area, but the pay was ordinary by Australian standards at $US9 per hour. That meant while I made enough to enjoy living in northern Thailand, it didn’t even come close to covering the mortgage repayments back home. It was during our two month stay in Chiang Mai that Sarah started working online as a freelance writer. She signed up to a couple of freelancing websites and began applying for writing jobs. Despite having no experience as a writer, in no time at all she managed to acquire several clients via Upwork. Initially [...]

The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

The east coast of Tasmania is all about the beaches. The sand is a brilliant white and the water a magnificent crystal-clear blue that you usually see on travel brochures and postcards. The big grey rocks with splashes of bright orange act as the beach’s bookends, while the native bushland that often lines the beach’s edge remains virtually untouched. The beaches are not tropical. Instead they are rugged, wild and sometimes isolated. And despite the Great Eastern Drive from Orford in the south to St Helens in the north being famous the world over for its spectacular coastal views, you’ll often have the beach to yourself if you choose to stop for a swim or a walk. Anywhere else on Earth, and a coastline like this would be a magnet for hotel chains, global tourist operators and real estate developers. But for some reason Tasmania’s east coast remains a quiet, charming and relatively undiscovered corner of the world lined with quaint little towns and spectacular national parks. We spent five days exploring the east coast from our rental home in Four Mile Creek, a town consistently of exactly four streets, a children’s playground and a cricket ground. Our balcony overlooked [...]

Songs, stories, and memories at Capon Springs Resort

by Mara @ Family Travel Blog | Family Vacation Inspiration |The Mother of all Trips

Capon Springs Resort in West Virginia offers a number of lovely hikes. On our second full day there this past summer, the boys and I drove the twisting dirt road that ascends the mountain at the far end of the resort. As soon as we got past the last few buildings on the resort property we were in the middle of thick woods. We passed no other cars on the two-mile drive and saw no other people on the easy hike along the ridgeline to Eagle Rock, where we were rewarded with views of the Shenandoah Valley. It was hard to believe we were less than 100 miles from Washington, DC.

Experiencing a Whale Watching Tour in Sydney

by Sarah Appleford @ Travelling Apples

One of my most memorable experiences during our travels has been whale watching.  To see these enormous creatures launch majestically into the water is incredible.  So when I was up to Sydney for work, I couldn’t wait to catch the last of the humpback whale season with Oz Whale Watching tours. Gathered at King St Wharf 9 at 8am, we were a group of about 20 people with cameras eager to catch a glimpse of a whale or two.  Once on board we headed out through the Harbour guided by our host Biggles.  Sydney of course put on perfect weather for our outing which enabled us to soak up many of her sights including Luna Park, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House. Luna Park on the harbour’s edge The impressive Sydney Opera house best seen from the water Biggles’ voice could be heard in the background as we cruised towards the heads, sharing a bit of history of Sydney and about the whales themselves. During this time of year the humpback whales are making their way south, and sightings of mothers with their newborn calves can be had. This leg of their journey is a little slower than usual so [...]

10 awesome things to do in Melbourne

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

There are so many things to do in Melbourne it would literally take days to write a single article. So instead I’m going to choose 10 of the best that I believe you should do if you ever visit my home town. Melbourne has now won ‘The World’s Most Liveable City’ award, presented annually by The Economist, five years in a row. That’s an incredible achievement by anyone’s standards, but it’s easy to see why. No matter what you’re into there’s something for you to do, like dining in first-class restaurants, attending a wide range of sporting events in world-class stadiums, taking in a play or musical in gorgeous theatres, or experiencing masterpieces in our amazing arts precinct. There is of course just one problem with Melbourne, it’s expensive. There’s no escaping it, you’ll need a little money in your pocket to fully appreciate this city. But by using services like Couchsurfing, the free inner city trams, and free events that can be found at That’s Melbourne, you can definitely have a great time without breaking the bank. You could also do a free walking tour when you first arrive so you can work out where everything is and get [...]

Vietnam Visa On Arrival – everything you need to know

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

The whole idea of a Vietnam Visa On Arrival approval letter seems a little strange to me. Having to apply and send money to a website you don’t know is legit, to get emailed an approval letter that must be presented at your arrival airports Visa On Arrival office (with more money) before you get your visa is a real leap of faith, especially for the inexperienced traveller. Given Vietnam was the first country we went to when we left Australia, we were about as inexperienced as you can get. But this is the process we went through and it worked out perfectly. What is a Vietnam Visa On Arrival As the name suggests, a Vietnam Visa On Arrival is simply when you’re issued with your visa when you arrive by plane, as opposed to organising it before you leave your country. You can go through your local Vietnamese embassy to ensure you have a visa before you leave your country if you prefer, but it’s more expensive, you’ll need to send your passport away and it takes more time. The bonus is you can just walk through customs on arrival without having to head to the Visa On Arrival office, [...]

There’s no escaping the passion for sport in Melbourne

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

The level of passion the locals have for sport in Melbourne is insane. Read the two major newspapers, listen to any talk back radio, or turn on the TV at pretty much any stage across the weekend, and chances are sport will be front and centre. I love my sport, I worked in professional sport in Melbourne for nine years, and even I get sick of the coverage. If there’s such as a thing as sports poisoning, then almost every Melbournian has a severe dose 12 months a year! If you’re a visitor to Melbourne with an interest in sport, you’ve come to the right place. At any time of the year you can check out some sporting event featuring the world’s best going at it. The number of world-class athletes who call Melbourne home and ply their trade here, plus the world-class athletes who visit with their clubs or for major sporting events is mind-boggling. So to try and cut through the clutter and confusion for you, here’s a comprehensive guide to sport in Melbourne. 15 freelancer jobs to make money on the road

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

Being a freelancer is a recent phenomenon from a mass scale point of view. Once upon a time work and travel were mutually exclusive pastimes for almost everyone. You either worked or you travelled, but 99% of us really couldn’t do both. Of course back when I first travelled overseas I worked as a primary school teacher in London for two years, but that was different. I couldn’t just get up and live somewhere else one day just because I felt like it. I was living in London, in a bricks and mortar building I had to go to Monday to Friday, earning money by teaching little English kids how to read and write. Today things are much, much different. The freelancer community is exploding and the amount of people either leaving their jobs to freelance online, or negotiating with their employer to work from home or on their travels, is in the tens of millions worldwide. For many it doesn’t matter whether you’re in your home office or on a beach in the Bahamas, as long as you have a laptop and an internet connection you can do the exact same job to the exact same standards. Without any qualifications, [...]

Shopping in Melbourne, where to get your fashion fix

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

Melbourne is defined by its suburbs, and almost every suburb has it’s own shopping precinct. Shopping in Melbourne is like a sport all of its own, to go with the myriad sporting options every visitor to Melbourne should check out. Melburnians are no shrinking violets when it comes to fashion, with many of the country’s trends starting right here in Australia’s fashion capital. However, with so many options, from the biggest chain retailers to the smallest chic boutiques, from enormous shopping malls to suburban shopping strips, it can be overwhelming to know where to go to get what your looking for. To make your shopping experience a little less intimidating, here is a selection of the biggest, best and most popular Melbourne shopping precincts for you to check out during your visit. Bourke Street Mall, CBD Shopping in Melbourne, Bourke Street Mall (Source: Flickr/avlxyz) If you’re visiting Melbourne you’ll probably spend some time in the city centre, so why not start your shopping in the Bourke Street Mall. You’ll find Australia’s biggest department stores, Myer and David Jones, in this pedestrian and tram-only precinct, along with plenty of other big retail chain stores such as Sportsgirl and Zara. At the [...]

Pittsburgh with kids: Fort Pitt history with a side of pizza

by Mara @ Family Travel Blog | Family Vacation Inspiration |The Mother of all Trips

A stroll or bike ride around Pittsburgh's downtown or a ride up one of its mechanized inclines definitely offers a picture of the city's 19th- and 20th-century industrial past, but of course Pittsburgh was important long before there were any steel mills. And since my older son Tommy is a big history buff the three of us decided after lunch on our second Pittsburgh day to ride our bikes back over to Point State Park and the see what we could learn at the Fort Pitt Museum.

Chable Resort & Spa: A Kid-Friendly Hideaway in the Yucatan Jungle

Arriving at Chable, a hacienda-turned-38-casita resort and spa within Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, we were ready for a bit of jungle fun — and that’s exactly what we got. A summer stay at Capon Springs Resort

by Mara @ Family Travel Blog | Family Vacation Inspiration |The Mother of all Trips

Arriving at Capon Springs Resort is a little bit like stepping into the middle of a vintage hand-painted postcard. It is built on the side of a deeply verdant West Virginia mountain, its white buildings graceful on the outside with latticed porches and window boxes making them look like wedding cakes. These buildings surround a long lawn dotted with stately trees, a fountain, and a music pavilion, its roof painted emerald to match those of the buildings. I half expected the other guests to be wearing leg o' mutton sleeves and straw boaters.

My 13 favourite travel movies of all time

by Chris Appleford @ Travelling Apples

As someone who loves to travel, there’s something extra special about watching travel movies. I’m an enormous movie buff. I’ll watch almost any kind of movie, and even if it’s rubbish, find something to enjoy about it. As soon as I watch a really good travel movie, I want to head into my bedroom, get my backpack out, fill it up with clothes and head to the airport. Being inspired to travel by watching amazing travel movies is one of life’s great pleasures. Here is a list of my 13 favourite travel movies of all time. Apart from the common travel theme running through them all, they all have other concepts and ideas that conjures up an incredible sense of wanderlust whenever I watch them. The idea that it’s never too late to travel, it will change your life immeasurably, you’ll meet amazing people along the way, and that we should use every day we have to live life to the fullest, are so powerful they inspired me to sell everything I owned and set off on a nomadic adventure with my wife and son. So if you’re at home looking for travel inspiration, on the road with time to [...]
