Saigon Along Riverside

by Mai Trang @ Saigon and Around – Discovery Indochina Tour Vietnam Cambodia Laos and Myanmar

The ‘rice bowl’ of Vietnam, the Mekong Delta is a landscape carpeted in a dizzying variety of greens and slashed with mighty waterways. It's a water world where boats, houses, restaurants and even markets float upon the innumerable rivers, canals and streams that flow through the region like arteries. At times you can quite simply lose sight of land.

The area is both riparian and deeply rural, but it's also one of Vietnam's most densely populated regions, with nearly every hectare intensively farmed. Visitors can dwell on southern charm in little-visited riverside cities, sample fruits traded in the colourful floating markets, or feast on home-cooked delicacies before overnighting as a homestay guest. Mangrove forests, sacred Khmer pagodas and off-the-beaten-track attractions round out the picture.

Tay Ninh & Cu Chi Tunnels

by Mai Trang @ Saigon and Around – Discovery Indochina Tour Vietnam Cambodia Laos and Myanmar

Cu Chi is about 40 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City in Southern Vietnam. The Cu Chi Tunnels are an elaborate underground community made up of 250 km of tunnels and chambers below the city. The tunnels were dug with simple tools and bare hands during the French occupation in the 1940s, and further expanded during the Vietnam War in the 1960s to provide refuge and a defensive advantage over the American soldiers. Despite all the bombings in their town, the Cu Chi people were able to continue their lives beneath the soil, where they slept, ate, planned attacks, healed their sick, and taught their young. Some even wed and gave birth underground, but over 10,000 lost their lives here.

Tay Ninh province, northwest of HCMC, is bordered by Cambodia on three sides. The area’s dominant geographic feature is Nui Ba Den (Black Lady Mountain), which towers above the surrounding plains. Tay Ninh province’s eastern border is formed by the Saigon River. The Vam Co River flows from Cambodia through the western part of the province.

Good Morning Saigon

by Mai Trang @ Saigon and Around – Discovery Indochina Tour Vietnam Cambodia Laos and Myanmar

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) is Vietnam at its most dizzying: a high-octane city of commerce and culture that has driven the whole country forward with its pulsating energy. A chaotic whirl, the city breathes life and vitality into all who settle here – visitors cannot help but be hauled along for the ride.

From the finest of hotels to the cheapest of guesthouses, the classiest of restaurants to the tastiest of street stalls, the choicest of boutiques to the scrum of the markets, HCMC is a city of contrasts. Wander through timeless alleys to incense-infused temples before catching up with the present in designer malls beneath sleek skyscrapers. The ghosts of the past live on in buildings that one generation ago witnessed a city in turmoil, but the real beauty of (erstwhile) Saigon’s urban collage is the the seamless blending of these two worlds into one thrilling, seething mass, while a host of new and exhilarating tours get you way off-the-beaten track.

Cooking Class

by Mai Trang @ Saigon and Around – Discovery Indochina Tour Vietnam Cambodia Laos and Myanmar

Perhaps Asia’s greatest culinary secret, Vietnamese food is on the radar but hardly a global phenomenon. Essentially it’s all about the freshness of the ingredients – chefs shop twice-daily to source just-picked herbs from the market. The result? Incomparable texture and flavour combinations. For the Vietnamese, a meal should balance sour and sweet, crunchy and silky, fried and steamed, soup and salad. Wherever you are, you’ll find exquisite local specialities whether that be the ‘white rose’ of Hoi An, the canh chua of the Mekong Delta or good ol’ pho of the north. Follow the suggestions below for a culinary tour you’ll never forget.

Experiencing a Helicopter Ride in Cape Town

Experiencing a Helicopter Ride in Cape Town

There She Goes Again

hile spending a week on my own in Cape Town, I decided to look into all the different sorts of activities I could do. It was midsummer for South Africa and I was alone, so I knew I had to forgo a few things I would have done otherwise (like hiking). When I was originally planning, I had wanted to go to Victoria Falls and experience a microlight ride. Since I scrapped those plans, I thought I'd look to see what sort of aerial activities were available in Cape Town. After some research, I discovered it was quite easy to take a helicopter ride and get some gorgeous views. I had seen NAC Helicopters recommended on a few blogs, so I decided to reach out and see what kind of tours they offered during my stay. NAC offers five different tours, and I went with the Hopper Tour. This tour offers views of the City Bowl, Sea Point, Camps Bay, Green Point, Clifton, and the Twelve Apostles. I actually brought along a family friend of Lynsey's, Hugo, and he made a really lovely video of the whole experience (you can see it here). It was my first time in a helicopter ever, and the views are absolutely stunning. Finding a way to see a city from afar is always my number one thing to do, and this was even better. There were only about four of us in the helicopter, a couple going on their first ride as well, and the pilot. The Hopper Tour lasted about 20 minutes, and afterward, you're treated to some champagne or juice where you can enjoy the sea views and have fun chatting about all the views you just saw. The V+A Waterfront is nearby, so it's easy to move on to dinner or drinks. It was such a lovely experience, and I highly recommend going for a helicopter ride while in Cape Town. Who needs a drone when you can just fly? :p MORE ON EXPERIENCING A HELICOPTER RIDE IN CAPE TOWN NAC requested we arrive about thirty minutes before the flight. Since the whole event from arrival to finish is only a little more than an hour, you'll have plenty of time to fit in other activities during your day. To get the NAC's headquarters, simply take a Uber there. From my place on Long Street to their HQ, the total cost was R45 or ~$3. Don't worry about what to wear. The other woman we went with wore a dress, and I wore leggings. We were both perfectly comfortable. While I was a guest courtesy of NAC, you can get the ride yourself for R4,320 or (~$320) for a 4 Seater flight. The price is the same for one person or four, so if you go with friends you can split the cost amongst the four of you. What cities have you done a helicopter ride in? I'm starting to think it might be the first thing I research in a new city! Disclosure: Thank you so much to NAC Helicopters for collaborating with me. All opinions are my own.
