Purépecha Style, An Indigenous Identity Stitched With Pride
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Mon Nov 27 07:32:55 PST 2017
The Purépecha are an indigenous group of people located in Michoacán state Northwest of Mexico city. They speak their own language and reside predominately in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range on a volcanic plateau surrounded by forests and lakes. The women of this region dress in a style soaked with Spanish influences and stitched with stories of folk life. The Purépecha people were a considerable pre-columbian civilization that maintained their independence from Aztec Empire despite numerous failed conquest attempts. It wasn’t until the 1530s when the Purépecha were eventually overruled by the Spanish conquistadors and their armies. Despite being converted to Catholicism the region has managed to maintain it’s rich traditional customs, as well as it’s reputation for producing folk art and fine crafts. Copper, carpentry, painting, ceramics and textiles have been traded by the same towns for over a thousand years, making Purépecha products some of the finest and most sought after in Mexico and beyond. The Purépecha people have a well earned sense of passion and pride about their artist ancestry and culture. This can be witnessed on the local women who strut their textile skills daily on their traditional dress. Purépecha women have a distinctive ethnographic dress adapted from […]

How to get to Ihwa Mural Village in Seoul
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Tue Dec 12 06:39:18 PST 2017
Just a ten minutes uphill walk along Seoul city wall near Daehakno district sits the Ihwa Mural Village. Climbing away from the city, the air clears, the noise stills and suddenly as you reach the very top of Mount Naksan you find a village dedicated to something quite unexpected; street art. Eleven years ago, Ihwa ‘moon village’ (so called because of it’s fantastic hill-side views of the moon) had been destined for destruction, due to it being rather run down and slum-like. Historically, moon villages were homes to the working class, who couldn’t afford housing down in the flatter, central parts of the city. The village was saved in 2006 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, who decided to transform the village as part of their ‘Art in the City’ initiative. Artists selected by the committee were commissioned to design 64 installations under the theme of ‘Mix, Connect and Get Together’. Over the course of six months, 70 painters (including local volunteers, art college students and visiting artists) covered the village from schools to homes, underpasses to stairways, walls, fences and rooftops with beautiful and diverse murals. After having become something of a tourist attraction the once slum-like […]

1000s of La Catrina Parade Through The Streets of Mexico For Día de Muertos 2017
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Thu Nov 02 16:52:52 PDT 2017
Over 1000 costume lovers paraded through Morelia in Mexico yesterday dressed as the cultural icon of death, La Calavera Catrina. Held on the first day of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead), families, friends and foreigners flooded the city’s streets for the second year running to see the spectacular congregation of elegant skeletons march towards the central Cathedral. “Death is democratic, because in the end, the mother, the brunette, the rich or the poor, all the people end up being skulls” – José Guadalupe Posada La Calavera Catrina was an illustration created by the Mexican political print maker Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852–1913). Published in local papers the early 1910’s at the start of the Mexican Revolution, the elegant looking skeleton was designed to mock Mexico’s Euro-centric elite, who were believed to be abandoning their indigenous heritage by starting to emulate the fashions and mannerisms of Europeans from Paris and London. Today La Catrina has been fully absorbed into Mexico’s annual festival of the dead and can be seen on everything from t-shirts to porcelain dolls, reminding everyone that no matter how beautiful we are on the outside, we will all end up looking the same in the grave. The costume […]

14 Reasons Vietnam Is The Best Destination For Textiles Right Now
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Wed Nov 08 06:21:17 PST 2017
Call me biased, but I say with conviction that Vietnam is the most unique and authentic country in South-East Asia. It has 54 distinct ethnic groups, many with their own language, lifestyle and long traditions that have been passed down through the generations. Between the tribal traditions, natural beauty of the landscape, incredible food and hospitable hosts, Vietnam is a must visit country worthy of anyones travel list. However. Vietnam is rapidly changing, and the changes affect all of it’s diverse people. Increased access to technology, media and mass produced goods are making the world a smaller, more generic place. In Vietnam, this is as evident amongst the younger generations of indigenous ethnic groups whom are now being exposed to a new way of life and opportunities previously unknown to their elders. Naturally, these young people are affected by what they see happening across the country, and they strive to fit in to a culture that was never their own in order to earn their place in the new world encroaching on them. As a result, traditional visual identities through dress are rapidly beginning to evolve, or worse, becoming extinct. This makes Vietnam one of the best destinations for anyone […]

The Handsome Hanbok & Where to Buy One in Seoul
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Tue Dec 05 06:06:03 PST 2017
The Hanbok is the traditional dress of Korea, worn by men and women, rich and poor, across the north and the south for over 1600 years. Throughout this time, its general design was similar to the sloping eaves of the Korean traditional house – the hanok – with a soft division of lines and angles. Throughout the centuries, it’s obviously maintained its popularity for good reason. It’s a garment of pure beauty, synonymous with Korean aesthetics and tradition. Thoroughly theatrical and distinct, it’s hard to not admire the strong visual structure of the hanging sleeves, bulging full-length skirt, floral detailing and pretty bows. Women’s Hanboks are comprised of two elements: the jeogori (cropped blouse) and the chima (skirt). It’s said that the wide curved arms of the jeogori represent the warmth of the embrace of the Korean people, and the wide flowing chima symbolises space and freedom. A sad representation, given the borders that now divide the Korean people. Under neath the dress is special type of (adorable) Hanbok underwear and a petticoat which adds the fullness to the silhouette. The whole look is completed with accessories such as a Norigae (hanging good luck charm) and hair accessories. The loose cut of the style […]

5 Of The Best Dressed Destinations To Get Your Freak On This Halloween
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Sat Oct 28 05:40:01 PDT 2017
Halloween or All Hallows Eve is by far our favorite annual celebration. Traditionally a Pagan turned Christian holiday for remembering the dead, today Halloween is a fully fledged festival treading the fine line between fun and fearsome. It’s a wonderful holiday that encourages people to embrace creativity, let go of your inhibitions and celebrate inner fears. Here’s Haute Culture’s top five global Halloween parties on our blood filled bucket list. 1. GREENWICH VILLAGE HALLOWEEN PARADE, NEW YORK CITY, USA The NYC Halloween parade is the biggest in the world. Sexuality, politics and pop culture infuse through many of the costume designs and all combine to create a hedonistic spectacle of epic proportions. This year, 60,000 participants are expected to attend. The 2016 parade included a papier mache Trump, whilst the 2001 parade was themed ‘Phoenix Rising’. A phoenix puppet led the parade to represent the strength of New Yorkers in the wake of 9/11. A troupe of dancing rod-puppet skeletons always lead the way, dancing through the streets of the city for one day of the year, celebrating the life and soul of NYC. 31st October 2017 http://halloween-nyc.com/ 2. DIA DE MUERTOS, MEXICO CITY, MEXICO. Whilst The Day of the Dead is […]

Within them I found everything that is integral to contemporary Korean style, from antiques to Hanboks, vintage fashion to cultural crafts, and stylish concept stores to sensational street food. Exploring the city in this style will serve you well. If you love shopping you’re gonna love Seoul, so let yourself get sucked into the mad but exciting consumerist culture that South Korea has to offer. Dongdaemun Market Dongdaemun market is one of the biggest haberdashery and fabric markets that I’ve ever had the joy to visit. There are over 50,000 manufacturers selling wholesale clothing, fabric, trimming and unique fashion items. The maze-like mini-metropolis is spread over two buildings and six floors. Give yourself plenty of time to explore this cave-of-wonders. The crowd here is mixed; expect to bustle your way through […]

Textile Tribes of Vietnam: The Ha Nhi’s Traditional Textiles & Rapunzel-esque Hair
by Donna @ Haute Culture Textile Tours
Tue Jan 09 04:17:47 PST 2018
The Ha Nhi are one of the most decoratively dressed but elusive ethnic groups in Vietnam. The various sub groups that encompass this diverse culture reside in mud clad houses, sloping up the mountain sides of Lao Cai and Lai Chau. Each Ha Nhi village dons differently styled traditional attire, showcasing a multitude of textile skills across the region. In 2017 Haute Culture visited the Ha Nhi of Y Ti village numerous times and built relationships with artisans there. Together, we developed a textile workshop for our annual Hill Tribe Textile Tour of Vietnam. In Y Ti, the residents wear a unique black cotton ensemble meticulously appliquéd with motifs made of coloured cording and a stunning head dress braided from black acrylic yarn and real human hair. Who are the Ha Nhi The Ha Nhi are a collective of different ethnic sub groups living in the north of Vietnam. They speak their own language, which is said to be similar to the Akha people living in Thailand and Laos. Before 1986, the Ha Nhi were known to farm poppies for the opium trade. The Vietnamese government have since illegalised the trade, so they now live off the rice they grow on their terraces and keep […]
