This is why we no longer ride elephants

by Andrew @ Intrepid Loves Agents

Intrepid staff and travellers are a very passionate lot; unafraid to speak up about ethical and social justice issues they may be confronted with during their travels.

Human rights issues, poverty, environmental concerns…there are many, but one of the areas that Intrepid folk are most vocal about is animal welfare. From witnessing animals in distress, to captive animals in poor conditions or working animals, particularly if it’s connected to tourism, Intrepid staff and travellers don’t hold back on speaking up for the voiceless.

Soph’s travel diary: Hong Kong

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Hong Kong is the true reason why you can’t judge a place by its cover or first impressions. I first went to Hong Kong when I was young and I mean reeeeal young. I was 7 years old and all I can remember was pretty much eating McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner to avoid accidently picking a meal that had shark, dog or some unknown animal part in it. Okay, that’s a bit of an overkill, but being young, naïve and chucking unnecessary tantrums, Hong Kong did not leave a positive impression on me. I went back again in 2010 on a school dancing trip before heading to the Macau International Dance Festival and you guessed it…I was not a fan for very similar reasons. So it seems crazy that out of all the places that I want to see the in the world, that I decided to head back to Hong Kong to give it another crack, third time lucky right? Why did I go back? My high school best friend, Sophie moved to Hong Kong in 2016 so the main incentive behind the trip was to catch up and explore her new home together. Unfortunately, I fell […]

Grub Food Van: the grooviest dining precinct in Melbourne

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

I’m a bit of a brunch enthusiast & have a very expensive addiction to eating out at groovy health focused cafes, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Melbourne is one of my favourite places. After all, it has got to be the foodie capital of Australia – everything is just so damn tasty. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s almost impossible to have a bad dining experience in Melbourne. This is a huge win for all those people that aren’t willing to do hours of research and wandering to find the perfect spot. For me, it’s just given me the incentive to find the foodie hotspots that are extraordinary and are truly stand outs from the rest. The grooviest dining precinct in Melbourne This leads me to Grub Food Van – an eclectic permanent coffee and food van in the hip suburb of Fitzroy. The guys at Grub Food Van have created an incredible dining precinct with outdoor picnic tables for those sunnier days and a larger seating area inside…inside being in a greenhouse. Yup, A CAFÉ IN A GREENHOUSE! How groovy is that?!? Oh how I love you Melbourne. Not only is it a cool place […]

Geckos Adventures: Vietnam Highlights review

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Touring life is pretty damn cool, but I will admit that I didn’t think the highest of it prior to my trip of a life time with Geckos Adventures. When you aren’t a part of a tour or haven’t done one before, you very easily resent the idea and snob everybody off that is waddling together in a group. I mean, are you really ‘solo traveling’ when you are with twenty other people and a tour guide to make sure you are on the 4am train, 30 minutes early with all the confidence that you are going south and not north? But let me tell you, when you join one, you suddenly realise why so many people do decide to tour. You will get hooked on the fun, (almost) stress-free and humbling experiences and memories that you make whilst venturing around with your newly formed, global friends. Why did I choose Geckos Adventures? I could actually afford it. Two of the biggest factors for me when arranging a trip is whether I can afford it (obvious, I know) and whether it’ll be worth the months of ‘sorry I can’t come, I’ve got to save’ explanations to my friends as well […]

I have had my fair share of staying in hip hostels, quirky air-bnbs and even treehouses all over the world, but I don’t think anything could ever compare to what I got to experience last night…a stay at the world’s first ever SAND HOSTEL. Commissioned as a joint project by Hostelworld, Gold Coast Tourism, Lively Productions and put to real life by product designer Jon Dowding and sand sculptor extraordinaire Dennis Masoud – the Sand Hostel is what dreams are made of and will certainly make you re-think hostel life. Great Ocean Road: 5 day self drive itinerary

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

The Great Ocean Road has got to be one the most scenic road-trips not just in Australia, but in the whole entire world. I know that’s a huge call, but by the end of this post you will see why. The 243km road hugs the South Coast of Victoria, starting in the surf capital of Australia: Torquay and ending in the small seaside village of Port Fairy. Being just a stone’s throw away from Melbourne, it’s the perfect little add on to your city trip, or long weekend nature getaway. I hired out my first ever campervan (and definitely not my last), got my two best friends in on the deal and hit the road with our Jucy Champ 4 berth camper, also known as Jucy Jay. Note: we called our camper Jucy Jay (just like the pop singer Jessie Jay) and yes we named our campervan…we even made a song dedicated to her and the memories we made – it was pretty special. We decided that the best way to truly embrace the van life was to not book any camp sites in advance and just take each day as it comes. Towards the end of the day we […]

by Kai Wieland @ Intrepid Germany

Geckos Adventures: Vietnam Highlights review

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ intrepid travel – Adventures of Soph

The 2018 travel hotspot revealed

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Backpackers, nature lovers and foodies rejoice – because I have a hot new contender for the best travel destination for not only 2018, but of all time. You’ll want to keep on reading but if I was you, I’d pop open a Skyscanner tab now and start searching for your flights because this is one country you do not want to miss. Sri Lanka is the new ‘Jenny on the block’ and I can list so many reasons why it should be on everyone’s 2018 travel bucket list. So fuel your wanderlust and book that first flight of the year to the land of endless tea plantations and palm tree dotted beaches. I am certain that you’ll be as hooked as I was. Sri Lankan food is healthy, fresh and so DAMN TASTY. I find myself rating each destination that I travel to based on how much I enjoy the food. Alike most people, I usually get to the two-week mark when I start to crave a home cooked meal and a gigantic green smoothie. Although this was not the case with Sri Lankan food. In fact, I have been searching long and far for a decent Sri Lankan restaurant […]
