The Famous Pho

by noreply@blogger.com (Blanca Lopez) @ Hue Stories

In our second outing we were successful in getting an interview with a famous fortuneteller that is widely known. Here are some scattered thoughts and first reactions from Nga and myself about that encounter.

Blanca: Pho is a 34 year old fortune teller who has been predicting for 20 years. Contrary to popular belief a fortuneteller does not need to be old and wise. Actually Pho dispels a lot of stereotypes that the media may portray in popular culture. Nga has assured me that Pho is famous for his talent and I know this is true because when we arrive there are several people waiting to be seen. We wait for nearly 2 hours to be seen conversing with others about why they are there. I ask simple questions and try to get a sense of how much value they place on what they will learn from their session. We speak extensively to a man named Long, he is here with his wife and they are only a few weeks from having their first child. They are a young, happy couple and he is happy to answer all of my questions. Nga does a lot of translating as Vietnamese is quite limited. When it is finally our turn she interprets my fortune and then translates an interview between myself and Pho. I have the impression that a lot was lost in translation for me as Pho spoke extensively and did not stop very often for Nga to translate. She seemed quite surprised from what I could read in her body language.

Nga: It has been a surprise for me that Pho gave up a lot of things when becoming a “real” fortune teller, such as his sexual pleasure, love and most of his daily time for helping people by reading people’s palm. Another amazing thing is that he can read his own future, so he wants to live his life morally. As a result, Pho adopted about 8 children whose parents could not afford to care for them or did not have the capability due to their child’s special needs. Pho also adopted a boy who has been facing a mental problem since he was a little child. Though his parents are really poor, they paid so much money to find good doctors but still could not make him feel better. The day they decided to have a fortune told by Mr. Pho, was the day that boy ended up living with him.
It is believed that it’s not easy to become a fortuneteller. You have to be the one who was chosen by God. For Pho, this means a Godly person who passed away and also dedicated so much for their country during the war. He referred to them as invisible people.

Blanca: Getting my palm read is not something I intended but rather an additional step in the process that had to be done in order to acquire the interview. I was reluctant but after waiting for so long, I was also a willing participant. I did not want to walk away with nothing. Upon entering, our intention was only to ask for an interview but we never got the chance. Pho started to read my palm and when it was time for me to ask him a question about my future, I asked for an interview instead, Pho happily agreed. He spent about 35-40 minutes with us and I left with less skepticism than when I entered. After the reading and interview, Nga asked me if I was now a believer. I replied, “No” but my belief in fortune telling was not swayed because Pho did not convince me, I have to admit he left an impression on me that tells me he has a strong element of clairvoyance. Rather it is my logic that will not let me believe and after this experience I can see the appeal of believing in fortune telling and it makes me wish for a more wistful view of it all. In the end Pho said that since I had visited to learn about him rather than to have a fortune, a donation was not necessary, but we provided one anyway. I was glad for the experience.

Nga: As a person who believes in fortune teller, I wondered how did Blanca feel after having her fortune told. I looked at her smiley face when we were walking out of the door, I’m sure that some part of her was satisfied with what Pho had told her.

Transformation: Taming the Bull

by noreply@blogger.com (Jk Hobson) @ Hue Stories

The process of research for this project that deals with the transformation of war through art has been ruled by happenstance. Cong Ho, a new friend in Hué needed an assistant one morning in training some of his Vietnamese students who were about to interview at the U.S. embassy for potentially studying abroad. After the training, he offered to introduce me to a friend of his, an artist in Hué. I was already feeling a bit overwhelmed by all of the research I had already done and all of the material I was having to contend with, so my tendency to decline offers such as this was brimming to the surface. I then remembered some advice that I was given about traveling and the accepting of invitations that made me reluctantly say yes, even with everything I already had on my plate. It was my fortune to have taken Cong up on the invitation.

We went to meet Tình, the artist at his place near Dong Ba market in Hué. As it turned out, I had met him once before at the coffee shop of local artist Hé a few weeks prior. He excused himself upon our meeting saying that he was feeling out of sorts, and that his capacity for speaking English would be somewhat limited, which I was ok with.  (Art has a way of speaking for itself.)  We sat and drank tea while he told me about his early life. He has lived in the same building in Hué for just about all of his life. He explained that he was 11 during the Tet Offensive, and that his home was sandwiched between the northern and southern Vietnamese armies. Artillery was firing off all around his home while he ducked for cover inside, waiting for a bomb that would reduce his residence to rubble that never came.  He watched fighter jets drop bombs onto the citadel from his windows. I could not help but imagine the trauma that could inflict on an 11 year old boy as he recanted his stories and shared with me images of his artwork that were stored on his computer.

I took notice that little of his art had anything to do with war, and more to do with Buddhist concepts of transformation. Cong mentioned to Tinh that I was Buddhist had some vast knowledge (a useful exaggeration) of the sutras and our conversation turned to metaphors and similes as we tried to gauge each others levels of understanding, as many Buddhists tend to do when they meet. At some point in the conversation, Tinh decided to bring me on a tour around the house to see the actual paintings and mosaics that I had been looking at on a computer screen. I couldn't help but feel like I had passed some kind of test.

The level of depth with which he was able to connect his artwork with Buddhist concepts of impermanence and becoming the master of one's mind really illustrated that Buddhism, along with art, had been instrumental to his overcoming of war-related trauma. I had seen a lot of post-war art in the weeks preceding from artists who were born at the end of or after the war. Most of their art actually dealt with the war itself, only as an abstraction. Tinh's age put him in a demographic of artists that I had yet to encounter. He was old enough to have seen and remembered the war, but its influence on his art revealed itself in the way that he had transformed himself as a result of it, rather than it being represented visually in the artwork itself.
