NATIVITY! THE MUSICAL - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Whilst the theatrical release of 2009’s 'Nativity!' may not have quite set the Box Office alight, the festive Brit-flick has subsequently garnered itself quite the cult Christmastime following in recent years, much akin to how, say, 'Hocus Pocus' found a whole new seasonal life for itself on home video and DVD at Halloween.

Review: ★★★ The Claim, Shoreditch Town Hall

Review: ★★★ The Claim, Shoreditch Town Hall

by Beth Pratt @ Upper Circle

The doors shut. The lights shift ever so subtly and a man in a rain coat walks to the front of the audience. He pauses and the silence stretches for what seems like hours, and so begins a very stressful seventy five minutes.

The Claim is an exploration of the process of seeking refuge in the UK, taking place inside an interview to determine whether an asylum seeker will be allowed to stay or be sent back to the DRC. The man in the raincoat swiftly becomes Serge, an immensely likeable, eloquent young man whose desperation to tell his story is only matched in intensity by the incompetence, hostility and suspicion of the bureaucrats he is attempting to tell it to.

The interview starts light-heartedly, as Serge and interrogator A attempt to reminisce about childhood favourite novels and share gummy snakes, but even here the gulf between them is obvious and misunderstandings abound. The entry of cold, detached interrogator B forces the interview into more serious territory and as it unfolds, Serge’s words are increasingly mangled with dire consequences.

The actors are excellent. Nick Blakeley and Yursa Warsama are very convincing as the two interrogators, with Blakeley in particular bringing many moments of humour to what would otherwise be an overwhelmingly tense production. However, it is Ncuti Gatwa as Serge who gives the standout performance, full of warmth and intelligence - the audience is firmly on his side within minutes.

Unfortunately the script itself is a little dense, and at times moves at a rather slow pace. Given that watching the interview unfold is painful, incredibly frustrating viewing, this threatened in places to tip the balance towards unbearable; and certain interludes between the two interrogators felt unnecessarily long. The sound design could also be a little intrusive at times; the ominous music of the scene changes trying to overplay a tension that, believe me, the audience was already feeling.

All in all though, The Claim is an imaginative and linguistically clever response to the stories of asylum seekers in the UK. It’s mission to provoke outrage and frustration at the bureaucratic system is very effective, and the fate of Serge and others like him is sure to be on your mind long after the play is over.

A CHRISTMAS CAROL - Theatre Review (Bilston Operatic Company)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The musical incarnation of festive classic A Christmas Carol is a deceptively difficult and ambitious production for an amateur company to tackle, not least of all owing to Alan Menken (of Disney fame) and Lynn Ahrens’ sweeping score, which affords very little in the way of musical downtime, a number of visualisation challenges such as the otherworldly ghostly spirits, and of course that old period bugbear.

THE COMMITMENTS - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The Commitments is a show that busies itself with ideas. Based on Roddy Doyle’s novel of the same name (the first in a trilogy, in fact) and the subsequent BAFTA-winning 1991 film adaptation, it’s something of a musical theatre curio. It isn’t based on any real life events, and mercifully carries no self-satisfied whiff of autobiography, and yet, in following a completely fictional formation of a working-class soul band in Dublin in the mid 1980’s, it strangely lacks in narrative.

There’s a propensity amongst those only marginally familiar with Logo/VH1’s cult hit RuPaul’s Drag Race to lump its alumni into a singular niche box, often bracketing them in with other ‘reality’ winners in terms of talent and ability (or lack thereof). And whilst it is true that of the 100+ drag queens that the show has brought to public attention there’s more than a fair handful of middling deadwood or vacuous forgettables, there’s real, eclectic talent to be found, too.

THE WEDDING SINGER - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The Wedding Singer sets out its stall clearly from the off. As the audience take to their seats, a skewed, oversized video panel treats punters to a selection of decidedly 80s film trailers. The Goonies. Rambo. Back to the Future. Naturally. It’s a very welcome bit of flash and period curiosity, and if it may at first seem to suggest a slightly surreal hybridisation with 1950s drive-ins, a time warping video leap into the first number plants the audience firmly on 80s terra firma.

Review of Woman Before a Glass at Jermyn Street Theatre

Peggy Guggenheim was an extraordinary woman. Her father, Benjamin Guggenheim drowned when the Titanic sank, and Peggy mourned his loss for the rest of her life. CINDERELLA at the Birmingham Hippodrome - Theatre Review (Panto)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Back in 2014, when discussing the subject, panto veteran Julian Clary told me how Cinderella is in many ways the ultimate pantomime. “It has everything, really. There’s the lovely romantic story for the younger audiences, the magic of the transformation scene, the ugly sisters, the lavish costumes.” It’s difficult to argue with his reasoning - if anyone knows panto, it’s Clary. It’s also no doubt a big part of why Qdos chose old Cinders as the tale with which to bring panto back to the London Palladium in 2016, the first of its kind performed at the venue in almost three decades.

FUNNY GIRL featuring NATASHA J. BARNES - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The news of Sheridan Smith temporarily stepping down from the role of Fanny Brice in Funny Girl’s limited London run last Summer was a nugget of theatredom that percolated out into the mainstream. The usual smorgasbord of rumours, speculation and hearsay often landed foul for Smith, fairly or not so, but amidst it all, as the West End experienced one of its rare high-profile intrigues, there was one irrepressible beacon of brightness and positivity radiating from the centre; the overwhelming response to Natasha J. Barnes, Smith’s understudy, who stepped into the role to rousing audience and critical acclaim.

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Despite only arriving as relatively recently as the early 1980’s, La Cage Aux Folles was a show decidedly ahead of it’s time. Sure, the early genesis of some of Harvey Fierstein’s later outings can be felt in this, his first major foray into musicals - few will be surprised to learn the likes of say, Kinky Boots, sprung from the same pen. But whereas Boots strutted into a mainstream already percolated with the likes of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Fierstein’s own Edna matriarch in Hairspray, amongst others, La Cage shimmered into focus at a very time. The depiction of a gay couple having raised a child and there being a degree of normality and authenticity to their years together was a relatively new and daring through-line for a mainstream musical at the time, and it sadly was not without its critics and deriders.

6 Shows I'm looking forward to seeing in 2018

by Emma Betty @ Upper Circle

I really just need to go and see The Book Of Mormon.

I know, I know. I still haven't seen The Book Of Mormon. I think it's one of those things where I just don't really have any sense of urgency because I don't think it's going to leave the west end any time soon. I would like to make it my mission to see it in 2018, though. I think it's time.

Alice Fearn in Wicked

Yes I've seen it a few times already. Yes I know the story. Yes I know the music. No I have not seen Alice Fearn and I would really really like to. I have plans.

Young Frankenstein

The amount of praise this show has had means I would really love to see it as soon as possible. With such a well known, talented cast it does look like a real spectacle.

Company

Patti LuPone and Rosalie Craig in one cast. That is all.

Fun Home

Fun Home is coming to the Young Vic this year. Having been beautifully developed for Broadway and based on a true story, it is almost sure to be a hit. I bought my ticket in a flurry of excitement on TodayTix when they went on presale a little while ago, but I'll make sure to update how to get your hands on a ticket, for this one!

Bring It On

I think we can all agree that anything that Lin Manuel Miranda has anything to do with is probably worth a visit.

What else should I be adding to my 'must see' list, and what are you hoping to see this year?

Review: ★★★★ EAST, King's Head Theatre

Review: ★★★★ EAST, King's Head Theatre

by Olivia Mackrill @ Upper Circle

Back at the King’s Head Theatre for the first time since 1975, heightened tension, sound, colour, and movement collide onstage to create Steven Berkoff’s EAST. It’s a physical and emotional carnival, with characters that exude so much life it’s almost overwhelming. The play is situated in London’s East End and invites us to plunge deep into the world of five characters that reflect the brutality, violence, and comedy of the 1970’s. Without a fixed timeline, we become witnesses to a jumble of moments and memories, overlaid by almost Shakespearean sounding verse. The fluidity of the language, and electric performances create extraordinary scenes onstage.

The first ten minutes of the play are a complete whirlwind and slightly confusing to start. However, with no previous insight into Berkoff’s work or the background to the play, it takes time getting know the characters. James Craze (Mick), Jack Condon (Les) and Boadicea Ricketts (Sylv) manage to keep up with the incredible ferocity and pace of the show, as they explore the passions and frustrations of their characters. At the beginning of the play, it felt as if their performances were too loud and overly animated, however, as the play progresses it becomes apparent that a real intensity is needed in order to play these characters. Each actor delivers a monologue that leaves them drenched in sweat and shouting at the top of their lungs, revealing to us the startling boldness of the personalities that these actors have to embody.

With minimal props, and in such an intimate space, the audience becomes hyper-aware of every moment. In one particular scene, with no room for set changes, the five actors have to clear the stage themselves- after the breakfast table comes crashing down centre stage. Because each performance is so detailed and intriguing, watching the five of them clean baked beans off the floor actually becomes incredibly entertaining. There is an intense physicality to the play, as the actors spill onstage fights break out, props are hurled across the room and bodies are thrown against each other. At one point Jack Condon adopts the role of a Harley Davidson, sound effects and all. In the tightly packed space, energy bubbles to the surface, and the audience are dragged into this richly depicted and imagined world.

The use of mime, accompanied by a live piano, is one of the shining features of the play. Moments play out in the form of silent films, with the actors adopting Chaplin style movements. The whole play starts to feel like a series of short black and white films or photographs. Its as if these moments in time have been captured, and are being explored from five different points of view. Whilst Debra Penny (‘Mum’) and Russell Barnett’s (‘Dad’) character’s reminisce about the past, no matter how awful, the younger generation confront the realities of the present.

Comedy is infused throughout the production yet the text has a seriousness about it, and is a wonderful combination of poetry and profanity. The production doesn't shy away from exploring the darker and more incongruous parts of London, which makes both the language and play vivid and powerful. The play incorporates, songs, live music, dancing, swearing and a mix of traditional and modern verse. The downside to this is that it can feel incredibly confusing, at times, trying to understand what you’re actually watching. However, just being part of the energy that fills such a tiny space is truly wonderful.

Horror on stage is scarcely akin to that which we see on the silver screen, and perhaps rarely is this more apparent than with The Woman in Black. It’s still remarkable to consider the fact that the legacy of Buddy Holly comes from such a relatively brief time in the spotlight. That his music is still being celebrated today, both on stage and off, is a testimony to that legacy that is beautifully encapsulated in Buddy - The Buddy Holly Story.

THE HUNDRED AND ONE DALMATIANS - Theatre Review (Birmingham REP)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

As a production, 'The Hundred and One Dalmatians' is much akin to its titular puppet creations. Bursting with charm, character and invention, if a little rough around the edges, with the gaps and joins (mostly deliberately) on full display. Central Dalmatian Pongo’s (Oliver Wellington) temperamental right ear, misbehaving and flapping over the character’s head throughout, is a neat analogy for the various slightly over-ambitious action sequences which are similarly wobbly or not quite as tight as they aught be.

EVITA - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Throw the question of which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is his best offering into a ring of theatre enthusiasts, and you’d best brace yourself for tempers, if not outright violence. Even pushing aside the naysaying hipsters and Lin-Manuel obsessives, a consensus would be an unlikely thing to reach. For some, the irrepressible character and vignetted charm of Cats would claw out the competition, and in fairness there’s always an argument to be made for ‘Memory’ being his most iconic standard, whilst Phantom and Jesus have fans by the droves. Sunset Boulevard has enjoyed a renaissance of late, thanks in no small part to Glenn Close’s triumphant return to the role of Norma Desmond, and you’ll always have a merry handful of Love Never Dies or Starlight Express defenders.
