Four Places Worth Visiting in Santorini

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

As your ferry approaches the port of Santorini and you watch the island getting closer and closer, it’s easy to believe that you’re sailing into the view of one of Alfred Sislay’s idyllic paintings.

On the southernmost border of the Aegean archipelago, Santorini is not only considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, but one of the most stunning in the world.

Once you set foot on the island, Santorini will take you on a trip into its past: it’s here you’ll come face to face with the ancient Minoan civilization and the magnificent frescoes it left behind, the grand and fearsome eruption of its volcano and the huge caldera that’s still marveled at by thousands of tourists each year, and of course, its beautiful re-birth as one of the most picturesque places of this Earth.

These are the four top places to visit while you’re there.

6 Reasons You Should Go On a Canal Barge Cruise

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Cruising has become one of the biggest trends in travel recently, though have you ever considered going on a canal barge cruise?

Canal barging is a unique form of slow travel popular throughout Europe, especially in France, Italy, Scotland and Ireland. The size of the canal dictates the size of the barge, but the maximum number of guests on board usually ranges from 4-12 passengers.

On board the barge are a handful of crew members who will help make your journey an effortless one, and while the options for barge cruises are vast, a luxury, all-inclusive barge cruise is definitely way to go.

While there are many reasons to take a canal barge cruise, here are the 6 most compelling.

What to Pack if You’re Climbing Mt Kilimanjaro (Packing List)

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

In October 2010 I traveled to Tanzania with the goal of conquering a mountain. And at 5,895 metres (19,341 ft), it was really, really tall. The highest mountain in Tanzania, the highest mountain in Africa, and the highest free-standing mountain in the world, if we’re keeping score.

I trekked through some truly incredible landscapes, transformed as a person along the way, and battled through one of the world’s most challenging journeys over 7 days.

Kilimanjaro is powerful, awe-inspiring, and an experience which inspires transformation. But if you don’t know what to pack it’s going to make your life a hell of a lot harder than it has to be.

Why Sri Lanka Inspires for a Second Trip

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Since I started travelling four years ago, I have been lucky enough to experience truly varied cultures and places, many of which I hold dear. Sri Lanka, however, has always had a special place in my heart and I’ve made it my mission to convince everyone else of its merits.

Despite a troubled past, Sri Lanka and its people are well on their way to a full recovery. More than that, they are very welcoming to people who wish to experience the beauty of their country and perhaps contribute a bit to stimulating the local economy.

I had such a great experience in Sri Lanka that I even decided to start my own blog about the country and inspire as many people as possible to visit! You can find the blog at takemetosrilanka.com.

With friendly people, incredible food, and stunning locations throughout the country, there are plenty of reasons to choose Sri Lanka as your holiday destination. You’ll love Sri Lanka for the following reasons, and it’s for these reasons that the country will inspire a second trip!

How to Book the Cheapest Hotels in 2018 (Which Match Your Travel Style Perfectly)

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

One of my biggest pieces of advice for booking a hotel has always been to ask yourself why. And the answer should be beyond the obvious “I need a place to stay for the night”.

Because millions of people are booking into hotels every night. But how many of them are actually getting their choice right?

The solution? Nustay; a new hotel search engine which has 1.2 million hotels at rates cheaper than any other online booking site (seriously). And, by crunching data about your interests, it matches you with hotels which reflect your travel style.

Move Over Las Vegas; Here are 3 Reasons Why Tourists Prefer Macau

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Thanks to appearances in countless Hollywood movies, Las Vegas has been widely regarded as the gambling capital of the world, with the bright lights of Sin City drawing visitors from around the globe for many decades.

However, the famous Nevada city can no longer claim to be the king of casino culture, and, in truth, hasn’t been for just over a decade now.

Rising to park itself firmly on that particular throne is Macau, which has transformed itself remarkably from what was once a sleepy fishing port to a booming Asian tourist destination at the top of many ‘must visit’ lists. Move over Las Vegas, because Macau is where the action is!

Things You Should Consider as a Responsible Traveler / EcoTourist in 2018

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

We’ve all seen the obnoxious tourists waddling out of Subway in some beautiful, ancestral city. Chances are, if you catch us on the right day, we’ve all been that tourist.

There is, however, a revolution in tourism that is really starting to take off. A whole new way of thinking which prioritizes responsible travel, and considers the impact we have on the communities and environments we visit abroad.

The negative impacts of tourism are usually pretty clear to the traveler feeling particularly perceptive. But ecotourism is the belief that travel should be ultimately beneficial to both the tourist and the host country.

There is a balance we should all try to find while traveling: remain safe but also truly experience the local scene. Make ripples, but not a splash. Take only memories, leave only footprints. The following are four key things to consider for those looking to travel responsibly in 2018.

An Overview of Different Travel Bags: Why it’s so Important to Choose the Right Bag for Your Trip

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

I’m sure every traveler at some stage has found themselves in the situation where they’re stuck traveling with the wrong kind of bag.

Whether it’s trying to lug a suitcase through the jungle and beating the crap out of your wheels (been there), or throwing everything into a hiking pack for a stay at a luxury hotel, a travel experience is often about choosing the right kind of bag.

And there are many different types of bags, which will be suitable for different types of trips. So don’t fall into the trap of thinking any bag will do, because you just need something which will transport your things.

Bags are not sacks. They are not meant to be used as sacks. Bags are painstakingly blueprinted to strike a perfect balance between design and utility, for specific types of trips.

So to avoid committing ‘bags faux pas’, consider the following types of bags, and which will be most suitable for your upcoming trip.

However, we believe in putting the money back into the Vietnamese community. If you need any reference, comments, and reviews about our motorcycle tours and rentals, please have a look here. Offroad Vietnam® is a registered trade name number 93860 on December 25th, 2006 issued by National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam. The Motorcycles. Do You Want A Reliable Honda? We are the first and the only touring company in Northern Vietnam offering Vietnam motorcycling on real road Honda GL Pro 160cc. Upgrade to Honda XR250 dirt bikes is also available at an additional cost. These bikes are between 1998 and 2005 models. They are of course much more reliable than the Russian or Chinese bikes many companies are still using. You can check why our customers liked them here. They not only offer you power and smooth operation but also guarantee a trouble-free and safe trip with disc brake(s). We own these bikes, maintain them ourselves and don’t use rental bikes from any company. Rental bikes are ridden by riders of all skill levels and are usually older or lower in quality. This is a very big difference that many companies do not mention about the rental bikes they use. The Guides First and foremost, Offroad Vietnam® is backed up by a team of guides who have many years touring on motorcycles, are highly appreciated by our clients. These guys are well recognized by most of travellers on motorcycles to Vietnam. Festivals are a big part of life in Vietnam, we offer you the opportunity to take part in these parties here every year. With this special cooperation, you can book one long tour just through one click and leave the rest to us. Our team has been offering motorbike tours for women since 2007. In fact, these tours are with slower riding and more stops so you can meet and talk with local people. Always keep in mind that all our tours and/or proposals can be customized before and during the journey, taking into account road and weather conditions as well as your riding ability and changes in your expectations. Information The webmasters at Offroad Vietnam work around the clock to upload the latest information about travelling in Vietnam, tours with places still available. We own a really big database of over 150 tours and thousands of photos and video shot on the roads which enable us to design and send you a virtual tour shortly we receive your inquiry. We have been trying to create one of the most interactive websites for touring Vietnam. You can read what experience and/or thoughts the most recent customers said about our tours and/or services. In fact, they are provided “as is” and we don’t alter anything at all. A detailed FAQs page is the first thing you can check before sending an inquiry to save your time and ours. We also provide free broadband Internet access and photo burning on CDs or DVDs to our clients. All the photos will be backed up on our hard disk and you can get them back anytime if you lose your camera or your memory card is lost or damaged. An Unintended Trip to Sula Vineyards: Discovering India’s Napa Valley in Nasik

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

A 3 to 4 hour drive from Mumbai, Sula Vineyards is the oldest winery in India. It is a fabulous way to unwind from the hectic bustle of city life, where you can discover the place where Indians first experienced wine.

In 1996, Rajeev Samant planted the first wine grapes in Nashik and today this region is India’s premier wine-growing region, producing 80% of the country’s total wine.

Spread over a total of over 3000 acres, Sula’s vineyards are home to some of India’s finest grapes, so if you’re looking for a place for your next wine tour, you should visit Nashik, in Maharashtra state.

This is India’s Napa Valley; after Sula Vineyards was established in 1999, 35 other wineries followed suit in the region over the next decade. It’s quite incredible how one man paved the way for the emergence of India’s Wine Capital.

7 Things To Know Before Travelling by Overnight Train in Vietnam - Mapping Megan

Mapping Megan

As many a traveler will tell you, taking an overnight train in Asia is quite an adventure, one that I have always found to be enjoyable and something to look forward to.Overnight trains are my favorite means of covering long distances because they're usually friendlier to my budget and more comfortable than taking long road trips being cramped in a small car or bus.The other advantage is that you get to stretch your legs out and get a good night’s sleep in exchange for just a little bit more than you would pay for a hostel or budget hotel.

Dear Female Travelers: Reasons Knixwear Is the Greatest Travel Underwear You’ll Ever Own!

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

Forget your passport, when it comes to travel, appropriate underwear is one of the most essential things. (Don’t actually forget your passport, but I’m sure you get what I meant!)

But traditional cotton underwear isn’t always the best option for travel – they’re slow drying and they absorb moisture meaning cotton isn’t the most comfortable or hygienic thing to wear for extended periods of time.

Underwear might be one of those things you don’t think twice about, but purchasing a pair for the practicalities of travel can make or break a trip. There are plenty of options out there for travel-specific underwear, but when it comes to being specifically designed for women, Knixwear is a Canadian based brand you should know.

The following are seven reasons why Knixwear is the greatest travel underwear you’ll own. But the biggest reason? The amount of confidence you gain from wearing them, for all the reasons below.
