Best Cherry Blossom Experience in Washington DC
by Jenia Ustinova @ House to Laos
Wed Mar 09 05:35:20 PST 2016
As your resident DC experts we have a great post for you today – our best tips for optimal sight seeing of Cherry Blossoms in the US capital. The peak bloom is likely to come super early this year – March 18-23, as opposed to the average early April timeframe – so get your walking shoes and cameras ready, hop on the next bus or plane, and get ready to experience Cherry Blossoms in DC like a pro! First, a bit of background – cherry blossoms are kind of a big deal in Washington DC, maybe even THE biggest deal. The National Park Service issues an official peak bloom forecast, and we have a National Cherry Blossom festival to celebrate the blooms every spring. The festival has been going on for over ONE HUNDRED years. And hundred years is a long time for the United States – that fact alone makes it a big deal. The original cherry trees were a gift from the city of Tokyo to Washington DC in 1912 to commemorate the lasting friendship between the two countries. And though relations between the US and the land of the rising sun haven’t always been so cordial, we […]

Castle Hopping in Albania
by Jenia Ustinova @ House to Laos
Tue Nov 17 14:38:54 PST 2015
Is it surprising that Albania is a great destination for castle hopping? Like, really great. Albania is not a large country, and there are by no means countless historic fortresses and edifices — which means that castle sightseeing is not overwhelming, there’s no FOMO, or castle fatigue. Another huge plus – you don’t have to have a PhD in architecture or history to discern the variations of the Albanian castles — set centuries apart, these sites represent little known, but endlessly fascinating history of a country whose long road to nation state is interwoven with the storied histories of the Greek, Roman, and Ottoman empires. We knew nothing about Albania or its history before we showed up in the capital city of Tirana ready for our grand tour organized by Albania friends. Our poor knowledge of the country was not entirely our fault — Albania spent the better part of 20th century completely isolated from the rest of the world by the design of its dictator in charge, Enver Hoxha. No one in Albania knew what was happening in the world, and conversely, the world knew very little about Albania, either past or present. Albania’s communist era dictator, Enver Hoxha had his name carved into the […]

Pardon the interruption in posting — we just spent the most amazing month on the road exploring Mexico. We have so many memories, thoughts, souvenirs, stories and tips to share with you. We will bump up Mexico in priority coverage, and start posting about it shortly. For now, I would like to discuss our addiction. It is known as travel, and I fear it’s getting worse. The day we left Mexico to go back to the US, I cried. And we were actually in Tulum — our least favorite (but not to say that it was totally bad) place out of all that we’ve explored in this amazing country. I feel a bit like a crack user — nothing will compare to the high of our first long term travel, but I must have more (and each fix is still so, so good). Anyone out there feel the same way? I am not going to ask how to alleviate this longing, because neither one of us really feels the need to do that. We will continue to travel, both short and long term for as long as we feel this need. On the plus side, I can say that choosing a lifestyle […]

Who, What, Where, When and How of TBEX

Fri Nov 27 05:45:43 PST 2015
Given my misgivings about attending a travel blog conference (and really, I would have very similar feelings about any other networking event, especially one that stretches over several days), I attempted to calm my nerves by researching what to expect of TBEX. I was able to find quite a bit of information, which reassured me a bit that it wasn’t going to be completely terrible. And that is in fact what happened. All in all, I though TBEX was a great investment of time, energy, and money. So if you are feeling unsure about attending, read part one on why I thought travel conference ended up being great investment for me, and hopefully that will help you to decide whether you should attend. And if you do decide to go – here’s part two on what to expect from TBEX. WHO: Goes to TBEX Expect to find lots and lots of travel bloggers. Some will be aspiring bloggers – as in, never have written a single post, and maybe they don’t even have a name for their blog yet. Others will be rather senior – but, most big time bloggers will be there in speaker capacity. A vast majority will […]

Fri Dec 11 10:18:01 PST 2015
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Gift time!! Just kidding — the holidays is one of the reasons we decided against the permanent nomadic lifestyle. We love evenings spent with friends and family, sipping whiskey in the warm glow of the fireplace and of course christmas tree (or as we call it — new year tree), reflection on the year past, and anticipation of new, exiting adventures. We love the coziness, the holiday parties, the pleasant errands that come with this all. And, you know what else we are super excited about? Our gift to each other this holiday season — a month long exploration of Mexico in January. We are super pumped about this. With this trip in mind, we’ve put together our 2015 HTL travelers’ Gift Guide. This list includes special items that we already own and LOVE, and a few items that would complete our travelers’ packs…in case, you know, you are thinking of getting us a gift, ahem. HTL Travelers’ Gift Guide: Technology Mobile Power Station for Smartphones/Tablets/Mobile Devices Our smart phone is an essential piece of technology we would not travel without. DC like a local: Cherry Blossoms
by Sergey Guryakov @ House to Laos
Fri Mar 18 07:42:37 PDT 2016
Last week we published our guide to the Best Cherry Blossom experience in Washington DC in the most iconic spot – the Tidal Basin. And it’s true, if you only have time/patience for one place, you’ve got to hit up Thomas Jefferson Memorial loop (exact location to see the memorial at sunrise). But! As great as that experience will be, it will be something that you will share with lots and lots of other tourists, locals, photographers, and brides-to-be. If, like us, you like to explore a bit more hidden places, away from the big crowds – then this guide is for you. Below are the best cherry blossoms spots in Washington DC – enjoyed mostly by locals, and a few tourists-in-the-know. Hains Point This is cheating a bit, as Hains Point is part of the Tidal Basin circuit. It’s a longish walk from one to another (30 minutes to get there from FDR memorial – your suggested location on the Tidal Basin, and then another 30 minutes or so to actually stroll the area), far enough that only about 10 percent of the Tidal Basin crowd ever makes it to Hains Point. Annual Cherry Blossom 10 Mile Run, Hains Point, Washington DC. Here are several […]

How to Travel with an Office Job
by Jenia Ustinova @ House to Laos
Fri Oct 23 06:43:33 PDT 2015
We’ve been getting this question a lot lately – how do you travel so much? Or rather, do you work? I guess that’s the appeal of travel for so many – it’s the opposite of the office, of work, spreadsheets, meetings. In fact, work was the driving factor that lead us to get off the wheel back in July 2013, and leave it all behind for 14 months. Now we are back in Washington D.C., and will call the nation’s capital our home base for the foreseeable future. November 1 will mark a year of us moving back into our house. And yet, we’ve traveled more in this year than in the previous three and half years that we’ve lived in our current home. How? What changed? And…do we work? The short answer to the question is yes we work, but we prioritize our time and money to channel towards travel. Just go – it’s that simple. But let’s break it down a bit more: Perspective & Attitude Perspective and attitude is the biggest reason we travel all the time. All other factors are supplementary and fluid — they can change at any time. I don’t know if we would have been as […]

Should you Attend a Travel Blog Conference?
by Jenia Ustinova @ House to Laos
Fri Nov 06 09:08:26 PST 2015
So, travel blogger conference. I made the decision to go to TBEX North America 2015 kind of on a whim, a month before the event. I spent the rest of the 4 weeks prior to the conference questioning, and even regretting, my snap decision making abilities. First of all, I am not a huge networker and we are also not certain how far down the ‘professional’ path we want to take this blog. In general, I find the whole concept of selling our ‘stats and message’ to anyone who would listen unnerving. Then, there’s the whole money matter – is it really the best way to spend our disposable income, given the first point? In the end I went – but only because of sunk costs. So, with those negative caveats in mind, here’s a rundown of my impressions from the first ever travel blogger conference that I attended. TBEX is a fantastic value The fact that TBEX is a fantastic value – in purely monetary terms – was my least expected conclusion. But it’s true. The $150 admission ticket gets you one pre-TBEX tour to area attractions (plus the option to just show up and take an unclaimed spot on […]

Fri Aug 19 05:30:56 PDT 2016
Pardon our tardy announcement – but here it goes – we have added a new travel companion to our team back in June: Nicholas. Its been a very new type of adventure for us, but we are slowly getting into the groove as a team of three. And while things have certainly changed around here with the new addition, we have no plans to stop traveling. Being able to explore, journey, and experience the big wide world is our way of knowing we are doing things right (for us). Nicholas has already proven himself already on one road trip this summer. We took the long holiday weekend in July to attend a friends’ wedding and explore a bit of southern Virginia. At the time N just turned 4 weeks, and we were a bit nervous about how he would take to our escapades. Sergey and I have a bit of a different perception on how ‘easy’ Nicholas is (who is surprised here?) I will just say, and I think Sergey has to agree, he is no magical baby that you only hear about from a friend of a friend that never cries, only coos, and sleeps through the night by the end […]

One day in Tirana, Albania
by Jenia Ustinova @ House to Laos

We’ve spent more than one day in Tirana, Albania — three days, in fact! — and found it to be a very pleasant experience to amble between our coffee shop of choice, several green spaces in downtown area, and a few monuments and notable buildings. Tirana is not going to win any awards for the most beautiful, or historic, city in the Balkans – in fact until 1920 Tirana was little more than a village and majority of it was built post World War II in ‘socialist ugly’ style. But, there is so much youthful energy and great ambiance in the fashionable boutique cafes and restaurants in Tirana, that we had a great time eating, drinking, and people watching through our three days here. If pressed for time, you can really see Tirana in one day – or even less. Below is how we would spend the day: 24 hours in Tirana, Albania Fill up on excellent coffee at the Mulliri Vjeter café right by the Youth Park. Grab one of the tables outside or right by the window and watch the comings and goings of stylish citizens of the capital city. Another bonus – you can catch up on the […]
