Voluntourism With A View In The Heart Of Cinque Terre

by Busabout @ Blogabout

On October 25, 2011, a devastating storm wreaked havoc on Italy’s Cinque Terre region. Vernazza, one of the five picturesque towns, was flooded and landslides buried it in more than 4 metres of mud and debris. In the week after the storm, Ruth co-founded Save Vernazza in hopes of restoring her adopted home to its former splendour once more. We sat down for a chat with her to find out more about what’s behind this exciting voluntourism project. The project started out as Save Vernazza after the 2011 floods. How has it evolved over the years? What began as a restoration effort has now become one of conservation. We partnered with Busabout and TreadRight to create the Turisti Nei Cian (Tourists In The Wild) Voluntourism Project. So far 1032 travellers have joined 121 excursions to help 20 landowners restore Vernazza’s beautiful, fragile territory since 2013. Vernazza’s town centre has been rebuilt following the emergency but Vernazza’s fragile territory continues to need help. Maintaining the territory is critical to avoid further erosion, prevent additional landslides and also to preserve a way of life that is centuries old. A post shared by SaveVernazza (@savevernazza) on Jul 5, 2016 at 4:15pm PDT What […]

Food frames travelling, marketing each point set to rest, perceive and nourish. From the moment we taste something new, to the time we arrive home and tell everyone they “…have to try this!” We’ve kicked off on a food journey, and there’s no better place to try new food than Vietnam. One of the best things about Vietnam is the incredible street food; however a common anxiety is the fear of food poisoning. It’s a common misconception that street food will be sole cause for an upset tummy, resulting in discomfort and annoyance that can interrupt and ruin a day’s sightseeing. However, street food is the safest bet for fresh cuisine. A good rule of thumb is to follow where the locals eat. A dingy little food cart that serves noodles from a communal pot but is overflowing with customers and bustling with noise, is much more trustworthy than an expensive make shift Western restaurant in the main tourist district! Street food is so indicative of local delicacies, how foods are traditionally cooked and cheap-cheap in price! It’s a no-brainer you’ll have your best food experiences for $2 from a little cart on the side of a market street. If …

Welcome to Hoi An, the most magical place in Southeast Asia

by Milly Tamati @ Blogabout

After spending 5 years traversing the globe, I’ve developed a permanent addiction to chasing the next new thing. New cities, new foods, new cultures. I get antsy at the thought of going over trodden ground when there’s so much more of the world to explore. There is however, one exception to this. The place that after returning time after time still makes my heart sing: Hoi An. These are just some of the reasons Hoi An takes the cake as one of the most beautiful places in Asia! The Architecture With humble beginnings as small port town before exploding into a major port on the silk route, wandering the streets of Hoi An is like taking a walk through over 1000 years of history. Becoming a UNESCO world heritage site in 1999, the melting pot of Japanese, Chinese and French architecture is exceptionally well preserved. Unlike other Vietnamese cities which are chaotic and incredibly busy, Hoi An has a very serene atmosphere. Instead of high rise buildings and endless motorbikes, Hoi An is a kaleidoscope of pretty pastel hues and lanterns of every colour. Live music in the street sets the perfect scene to take an evening stroll along the […]

How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

Leanne’s Journal: Amsterdam

by Busabout @ Blogabout

We arrived in Amsterdam, the city of lust, bridges, canals, and even more bikes. This place has quite the reputation; if you’re anything like me, when you think of The Netherlands it’s an odd mixture of images that spring to mind. On one hand its taboo tourist attractions with X-rated themes, along with some very “relaxed” and progressive attitudes. On the other, it’s green grass, beautiful brick architecture, and a whole lotta delicious cheese. Over the last few days we’ve scouted out the cool spots and tourist attractions this eclectic city is famous for. Hopping off the coach from Bruges, I eagerly checked into the infamous ‘Worst Hotel in the World’, the Hans Brinker hostel. This party hostel has a very unique way of marketing themselves, claiming to have terrible service and unsanitary living spaces, with guests leaving looking worse than when they arrived. But that wasn’t the case at all; it wasn’t flash, but it definitely wasn’t a bad hostel by any means. In fact they ticked all the boxes for decent facilities! It seems they’ve gone with the whole “under-promise, over-deliver” idea, so that guests are pleasantly surprised. Strange? Yes. But hey, it worked. A post shared by […]

‘A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY’: THE TWILIGHT ZONE EPISODE THAT EXPLORES OUR NEED TO TRAVEL

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

“a place around the bend where he could jump off”

Created during a time (1959-1964) when American television seemed eerily clean and domestic, The Twilight Zone challenged viewers to examine a possibility of uncertainty beyond the comforts and assumptions of contemporary life. It was my favorite thing on TV. One episode in particular always stuck with me- A Stop at Willoughby. It brings up questions. How could such a ‘successful’ man working in a New York tower and living in an upscale suburb be so miserable? Why would he dream of escaping to a sleepy village where the streets have no name and the children wear overalls and go fishing?

A STOP AT WILLOUGHBY is the story of an advertising executive named Gart. Gart feels endless pressure from his pugnacious boss and his minion-like coworkers at his New York City office during ... Read More »

Four Places Worth Visiting in Santorini

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

As your ferry approaches the port of Santorini and you watch the island getting closer and closer, it’s easy to believe that you’re sailing into the view of one of Alfred Sislay’s idyllic paintings.

On the southernmost border of the Aegean archipelago, Santorini is not only considered to be one of the most beautiful islands of Greece, but one of the most stunning in the world.

Once you set foot on the island, Santorini will take you on a trip into its past: it’s here you’ll come face to face with the ancient Minoan civilization and the magnificent frescoes it left behind, the grand and fearsome eruption of its volcano and the huge caldera that’s still marveled at by thousands of tourists each year, and of course, its beautiful re-birth as one of the most picturesque places of this Earth.

8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. Also be sure to check out our handy guide to ordering coffee in Vietnam.

Interesting facts about candies

by admin @ Just Fun Facts

Candy, also called sweets or lollies, is a confection that features sugar or other sweeteners as a principal ingredient. The word “candy” comes from ancient Indian Sanskrit. Khanda means “a piece of sugar.” Years later, the Arabic version moved one step closer with qandi. The Middle English word “candy” began to be used in the late 13th century. Although it is believed that Indians were the first to use the sweet juice of sugarcane about 3000 years ago, there is some evidence that islanders in Papua New Guinea were aware of the sweetness of sugarcane nearly 3000 years before that!

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. Pad thai made with instant noodles? You’ll find it all over Phuket and Koh Samui. If you venture past the tourists districts, the food ... Read More »

Things You Should Consider as a Responsible Traveler / EcoTourist in 2018

by Meg Jerrard @ Mapping Megan

We’ve all seen the obnoxious tourists waddling out of Subway in some beautiful, ancestral city. Chances are, if you catch us on the right day, we’ve all been that tourist.

There is, however, a revolution in tourism that is really starting to take off. A whole new way of thinking which prioritizes responsible travel, and considers the impact we have on the communities and environments we visit abroad.

The negative impacts of tourism are usually pretty clear to the traveler feeling particularly perceptive. But ecotourism is the belief that travel should be ultimately beneficial to both the tourist and the host country.

There is a balance we should all try to find while traveling: remain safe but also truly experience the local scene. Make ripples, but not a splash. Take only memories, leave only footprints. The following are four key things to consider for those looking to travel responsibly in 2018.

Interesting facts about guinea pigs

by admin @ Just Fun Facts

The guinea pig (Cavia porcellus), also known as cavy, is a domesticated species of rodent. Despite his name, the guinea pig does not hail from New Guinea or any other Guinea, nor is he a pig; he makes piglike noises and he likes to eat, though. Guinea pigs were originally native to South America. They no longer exist in the wild. The guinea pig was first domesticated as early as 5000 BC for food by tribes in the Andean region of South America (the present-day southern part of Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia). European colonization of South America led to

Interesting facts about walnuts

by admin @ Just Fun Facts

The walnut is the nut from any tree in the genus Juglans, but the walnut that we refer to most often is that of the Persian or English walnut, Juglans regia. Technically a walnut is the seed of a drupe or drupaceous nut, and thus not a true botanical nut. It is native to the region stretching from the Balkans eastward to the Himalayas and southwest China. Walnuts are one of the oldest tree food known to man, dating back to 7000 B.C. The Romans called walnuts Juglans regia, “Jupiter’s royal acorn.” Early history indicates that English walnuts came from

However, the famous Nevada city can no longer claim to be the king of casino culture, and, in truth, hasn’t been for just over a decade now.
