Vespa Adventures: The Insider's Phnom Penh Tour

Vespa Adventures: The Insider's Phnom Penh Tour

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

The Insider’s Phnom Penh, a day full of exploring this busy city and its bustling culture thanks to Vespa Adventures. We love street art and got to see an entire neighborhood filled with unique and colorful creations. We strolled through famous monuments, pagodas and one of our favorite local markets thus far. In 4 hours, we learned so much about Cambodia, its history, people and culture. The highlight of the day? Receiving a traditional Krama scarf from Silk Island from our awesome tour guide, Kunthul.

Best Eats of George Town, Penang

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

Summer and I have a love for art, especially street art so when we were recommended/urged to visit George Town for its street art, we knew we had to go... and man was it worth it. We never wanted to leave. We spent each of our 5 days just walking around the city finding new street art each time, eating some of the best food in SE Asia and saying hello or smiling at the friendliest locals and people on the street.

Vespa Adventures: After Dark Foodie Tour in Siem Reap

Vespa Adventures: After Dark Foodie Tour in Siem Reap

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

We cruised through the streets of Siem Reap to get a taste of all local delicacies and dishes. We began the night with drinks and appetizer at FCC Angkor and nightcapped at Asana, a trendy place to get cocktails and food. The highlight was eating insects and some of the best BBQ chicken at Road 60, where locals hang out after work at a outdoor style carnival with heaps of food, vegetable and fruit booths. Not to mention, the fireants we ate later in the night for dinner at a local restaurant. Yes, fireants. Don't worry, they weren't alive, just spicy and bitter tasting.

Vespa Adventures: Siem Reap Countryside Tour

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

Our first Vespa Adventures in Cambodia exploring the countryside in Siem Reap. We were blessed by monks in the beginning of our trip, explored Buddhist temples, learned about a local food market, went on a boat cruise towards the restoration of a temple in the middle of a reservoir, stopped at a local's house for lunch with traditional Cambodian dishes, saw a local woman's basket weaving, ate traditional Krolan, sticky rice steamed inside of a bamboo and stopped at a traditional herbal medicine shop towards the end of our trip. We saw true local life in the countryside on the outskirts of Siem Reap and learned an incredible amount about Cambodian culture and traditions.

Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) at sunset and sunrise in Chiang Rai

Wat Rong Khun (the White Temple) at sunset and sunrise in Chiang Rai

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

t was one of the most unique temple interiors and exteriors we have ever seen and definitely worth seeing. It is all white (with some silver accents) on the outside featuring some eerie, dark statues, just our cup of tea. Inside is a beautiful Buddha featured on the main wall, but one would be a fool if they do not turn around once inside. Now I don’t want to give it all away, but on the back wall the artist painted a huge mural to represent Buddhism in the modern age.

Cave exploring with Gaymoo, a local Karen jungle guide, in Mae Hong Son

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

We tagged along with a group of 5 other explorers who came from Pai for the adventure. Our group was picked up in the morning and we were loaded into the back of a pickup and dropped off at the forest with our Karen Village guide, Gaymoo. We then trekked through the forest for an hour trying random fruits along the way, saying hi to some mud bathing water buffalos, blowing bubbles through the leaves of bubble plants and finally making it to our first cave. It had rained the night before so entering this first cave was quite slippery in the mud as we had to nearly crawl on hands and knees for 10 meters. Once in we walked around the beautiful cave seeing all the untouched formations.

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

At certain times of the year, you can kayak on the Nam Lang river that runs through the cave but this time around we could only ride the bamboo raft. You must have a guide take you through the cave so we paid our fees and set off to explore all 3 caves within, all of which had something different to offer. They all blew our mind and we wish we had hours to spend exploring each little crevice. We arrived at the exit of the cave during the perfect time to see the hundreds of birds and bats swarm around in circles returning home from a day outside. It was one of our favorite caves and right in our backyard of Cave Lodge.

Soaking in local hot pools and sipping on meerkat poop coffee (kopi luwak)

Soaking in local hot pools and sipping on meerkat poop coffee (kopi luwak)

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

Our first full day in Bali we decided to cruise down the street with Putu, our driver to some local hot pools. Feeling elated and completely zen, we decided to pick up our energy by sipping on meerkat poop. That’s right… drinking coffee produced from a meerkats digestive system. Similar to Vietnamese weasel coffee, kopi luwak (meerkat coffee) in Indonesia is made from roasting the coffee beans that meerkats run through their system.

Exploring Australia's East Coast waterfalls

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

While Queensland is infamous for being home to the natural wonder, the Great Barrier Reef, we decided to make a road trip inland for a little bit to explore the beautiful nature on land in the Queensland national parks and waterfalls. We would’ve explored them all if we could but we managed to at least squeeze in four majestic ones in four days.

Exploring Chiang Mai and finding the best eats

Exploring Chiang Mai and finding the best eats

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

We arrived in Chiang Mai in the late morning on the 15th and spent our day relaxing, eating AMAZING Thai food and rejuvenating. We ate the best lunch ever, walked around a little, relaxed at the bed and terrace, ate more amazing food for dinner and finished off the night with a $6 Thai massage. Doesn't get much better than that to make us happy. We knew we would be back to Chiang Mai after our stay at the Cave Lodge so we just relaxed and went to bed early for our long journey the following day.

Relaxing in a paradise villa in northern Bali, Indonesia

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

Our 8 days in paradise were spent sunbathing by the pool, sipping on espresso martinis, stuffing our faces full of amazing home cooked meals, watching the glowing sunrises and sunsets, getting in-house massages, soaking in nearby hot pools, hiking to 5 waterfalls, drinking lemak (meerkat poop) coffee, snorkeling on nearby islands, watching a traditional Balinese dance, riding motorbikes along the ocean to play with some abandoned newborn puppies and one of my highlights, watching a family of 20+ dolphins travel through the calm waters at sunrise.

Our last full day in paradise we woke while it was still dark and piled onto a single file motor junk boat with a local man and his son. We set off with sleepy faces to go dolphin watching during sunrise. Sadly the sun hid behind a heavy layer of clouds as it rose but we were blessed with watching at least 20 dolphins travel together alongside our boat for nearly 30 minutes.

What really inspired us was the Banksy style street art that began in 2012. Starting with a few pieces done by Ernest Zacharevic, the city is now filled with nearly 30+ beautiful pieces. The new ones shine bright against the worn down rustic building walls while the originals are slowly fading away, grasping onto every inch of paint it can.

Discovering Hong Kong's best cheap eats, art galleries and film camera shops

by Kayli Stix @ Journal - Get Busy Exploring

We spent our first few days exploring the massive city on Hong Kong island admiring all of the street art we could find, including a piece by Shepard Fairey. We explored all the art galleries we could (most were closed on the days we tried) and shopped in camera stores, Summer’s favorite pastime. We ate some of the best dumplings and stuffed our faces silly every chance we had, As we are truly now traveling on a budget, we did not get to eat at some of the best places HK has to offer but we did find some amazing cheap eats. We of course got our bubble tea every chance we could.
