Geckos Adventures: Vietnam Highlights review

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Touring life is pretty damn cool, but I will admit that I didn’t think the highest of it prior to my trip of a life time with Geckos Adventures. When you aren’t a part of a tour or haven’t done one before, you very easily resent the idea and snob everybody off that is waddling together in a group. I mean, are you really ‘solo traveling’ when you are with twenty other people and a tour guide to make sure you are on the 4am train, 30 minutes early with all the confidence that you are going south and not north? But let me tell you, when you join one, you suddenly realise why so many people do decide to tour. You will get hooked on the fun, (almost) stress-free and humbling experiences and memories that you make whilst venturing around with your newly formed, global friends. Why did I choose Geckos Adventures? I could actually afford it. Two of the biggest factors for me when arranging a trip is whether I can afford it (obvious, I know) and whether it’ll be worth the months of ‘sorry I can’t come, I’ve got to save’ explanations to my friends as well […]

DESTINATION BUCKET LIST: CAIRNS

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It seems ironic that I absolutely love Far North Queensland now that I have moved away from there. You see, I grew up in Cairns and it’s definitely fair to say that I took it all for granted and I’m sure I’m not the only one. It wasn’t until I ventured back there at the end of 2017 to show my best friends from England my home town that I fell in complete awe of the place. I hadn’t been back in three years, so the combination of having ultimate freedom & a whole lot of nostalgia paired with my best friends, made it one memorable week. I have piled together some of my absolute must do’s for Cairns and the surrounds. Get yourself a car, put your adventure shoes on and get exploring. Cairns is such a beautiful place and by following this bucket list, you’ll definitely make the most of your time there! 2017: The year of courage & learning to love myself again

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It’s crazy to even think that 2017 has come and gone already. Every year that passes seems to fly by quicker than the last. I have spent a lot of time over the last few days reflecting on the year that’s been and to say that it’s tugged on the heart strings is a huge understatement. The year started off with a typical Sophie moment – quitting my job to channel my happiness and longing for adventure. I jetted off to South East Asia for a month just a week after leaving my job at Flight Centre. It was definitely a top way to start the year off. But when I got back from my travels, everything settled back in and came crashing down before I could even try to fix things. Up until July, I was fighting my own battle with depression. When I was packing up my stuff to move, I read through my journal that I had kept from the first few months. It was so scary to read through and see how unwell I was. I’m so happy to say that I found the light at the end of the tunnel and it was a damn […]

If you so happily happen to have a few days in Venice, be sure to take a self-guided tour of the two most popular islands in the Venetian Lagoon; Murano and Burano. One thing that is extremely important however, is that no maps are involved. Get that? NO MAPS. NO GPS. Firstly, by wandering the cobbled streets unknown you are able to get a more localised feel to the village, drifting away from the tourists that swarm the canal side come Summer holidays. The photographs also tend to look a lot more beautiful when there are no selfie sticks photobombing your shot. If you are worried about getting lost, there is no need to be. Both islands are very small and there are multiple landmarks that you can familiarise yourself with to help make your way back to the ferry port. Without further to do, here is your one stop guide to the beautiful islands of Murano and Burano. Transport The cheapest and most economical way to get to the islands is via the ACTV ferry. There are multiple lines that loop the Venetian Lagoon and come very frequently, so no need to keep on an eye on the watch, unless it’s nearing …

Bicycle in Japanese life

by cyclingvietnam @ Cycling Vietnam, biking and cycle holiday in Vietnam

How To Ride A Bicycle In Japan December 11, 2012 by Koichi 92 Comments While Japan isn’t quite like Portland, OR, where there needs to be double-decker bike etiquette, Japan has what I’d consider to be fairly unique rules when it comes to riding a bicycle. I’m not sure about how things are in Europe, but any American who decides to jump onto a bicycle in Japan for the first time is going to be in for quite a surprise. Things are done differently, there. So, grab yourPBR Asahi Super Dry, put on those training wheels, and get ready for a leisurely bicycle ride of learning! Ding ding! 1. Ride On The Sidewalks Photo by iMorpheus … that is, unless you’re not supposed to. Same with roads. You should ride on them unless you’re not supposed to. What? It’s time to learn rule one of riding a bicycle in Japan: “There are going to be many laws around bicycles in Japan, but they’re hardly ever enforced, so you know, do whatever, and follow a bit of common sense if you can.” You’ll see this idea coming up again and again throughout this post. The fact of the matter is, Japanese [...]

Private Cu Chi Tunnels Tour

by @ Trips Treks and Tours

On Private Cu Chi Tunnels Tour, VN Bike Tour local guide will show you a full view of Cu Chi – the dead land in the past but turning brighter and peaceful presently. Cu Chi tunnels are well-known for its architectural structure with the complex network of over 250 km long. The tunnel system was created for hiding, safe living and fighting the enemy during Vietnam – American War. We all understand one of the reasons why many worldwide travelers come to Vietnam for searching how V.C soldiers survived during the bloody cruelty of French & American war with a scary slogan “kill anything that moves”. Tourists can now visit portions of the Cu Chi Tunnels, crawl through some of the safer areas of the tunnels, view command centers and booby traps, fire an AK-47 rifle on a firing range and even eat a meal featuring typical foods that soldiers living in the tunnels would have eaten. Besides, Private Cu Chi Tunnels Tour also includes a stop at a spontaneous local market to enjoy fresh tropical fruits. ITINERARY Visit Cu Chi Tunnels once in life to understand more about the strong will, tenacity, intelligence, creation, and the pride of inhabitants over there and see clearly a symbol of Vietnamese revolutionary heroism. When is the perfect time for exploring Cu Chi Tunnels? Because Cu Chi tunnels tour is a private tour, so the pick-up time is flexible due to your own request. Normally, for the easy choice, we offer 2 time slots: Cu Chi Morning Half-day tour: start at 08:00am (return back to Saigon around 01:30pm) Cu Chi Afternoon Half-day tour: start at 01:30pm (return back to Saigon around 07:00pm) On Private Cu Chi Tunnels Tour, 102 Travel guarantees there is no incurred expense during the whole tour. (*) With Private Cu Chi Tunnels Tour, if you want to travel like the natives and understand deeper about the real local life, you should choose the morning tour option. - Enjoy both countryside with big farming and jungle sightseeing. - Watch a short documentary film about Cu Chi during the war (in many foreign languages options to choose) - Discover the cover of secret refuge and an incredible network of Cu Chi tunnels. - Crawl through the narrow tunnels which are totally made by hand - Gain more knowledge about history, weapons and damaged self-construct traps etc. - Try to shoot with AK47 or MK16 riffles in a well supervised area (*optional with surcharge) - Taste the main dish which locals ate during the war time: Boiled tapioca with hot Vietnamese pineapple leaves tea. - Especially, when you book this Cu Chi tunnels tour with VN Bike Tour, you will have a chance to explore the hidden local area: a spontaneous countryside wet market, maybe to try some fresh seasonal fruits or a coffee drink, make some fun and share your laugh with friendly local sellers. INCLUSIONS - Travel insurance ($5,000.00/case). - Good quality air-conditioner private car. - Free pick-up and drop-off service in Saigon. - Helpful English speaking tour guide. - 1 main meal, local snacks / fruits and tea. - Bottled drink and wet tissue. - Entrance fee to Cu Chi tunnels. - Light snack with tapioca and tea at Cu Chi tunnel. - Tropical fruits at local market. * Note: Please kindly let us know if you have any food allergies or special requests. EXCLUSIONS - Other meals not mentioned in itinerary. - Tips and personal expenses. - Bullet fee at Cu Chi shooting range.

Great Ocean Road: 5 day self drive itinerary

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

The Great Ocean Road has got to be one the most scenic road-trips not just in Australia, but in the whole entire world. I know that’s a huge call, but by the end of this post you will see why. The 243km road hugs the South Coast of Victoria, starting in the surf capital of Australia: Torquay and ending in the small seaside village of Port Fairy. Being just a stone’s throw away from Melbourne, it’s the perfect little add on to your city trip, or long weekend nature getaway. I hired out my first ever campervan (and definitely not my last), got my two best friends in on the deal and hit the road with our Jucy Champ 4 berth camper, also known as Jucy Jay. Note: we called our camper Jucy Jay (just like the pop singer Jessie Jay) and yes we named our campervan…we even made a song dedicated to her and the memories we made – it was pretty special. We decided that the best way to truly embrace the van life was to not book any camp sites in advance and just take each day as it comes. Towards the end of the day we […]

I watched the sunrise every day for a week and this is what happened…

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

It’s safe to say that there is a definitive divide between people who prefer sunrise over sunset and vice versa. You see, I’m considered one of those crazy people that enjoy waking up when everybody else is having a relationship with their pillow. Watching the sunrise gives me time to think about what I want to achieve and focus on for the day ahead and the added bonus is that I get to watch it over the ocean – the perks of being a Queenslander. As well as it being absolutely mind-blowing (and obviously the best part of the day), it’s almost always guaranteed that there will be less people watching the sunrise than people watching the sunset. It feels so special to be in the minority, let alone have a spot to yourself! Being a true sunrise fan, I decided two years ago that I would wake up every day for one week and watch the day begin. As I now live just a 3-minute drive to the beach and have access to a car, I figured that it would be a brilliant time to tick it off the bucket list. I will admit, doing this in the Australian […]

Hanoi to Luang Prabang Bicycle Tour 13 days

by biketours @ Self Guided Bike Tours – Vietnam Bike Tours, Cycling Holidays and Bike Tours in Vietnam

We spend a couple of days cycling around its beautiful valleys before we set off on a long traverse of some pretty wild country, that will eventually take us into Laos. Beyond the Tram Ton Pass (2000m), the highest road pass in Vietnam, we cross into a land known to the local Hmong people as 'beyond the clouds', with our route snaking its way between lofty passes and steeply terraced river valleys. Staying in a succession of traditional towns we'll discover the 'Montagnards', the amazingly colourful minority tribes that continue to make their living amongst these high valleys and villages. We end our Vietnam journey at the remote and historical town of Dien Bien Phu. Crossing into the mountainous northern part of Laos, we will find ourselves in a country only recently emerging from its turbulent past, where it will feel as if we are riding back in time. Unused to meeting foreign tourists, the Laotians retain a rare and innocent charm. Here we mix our biking with a traditional longboat journey down the Ou River. Our adventure ends in Luang Prabang

The 2018 travel hotspot revealed

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Backpackers, nature lovers and foodies rejoice – because I have a hot new contender for the best travel destination for not only 2018, but of all time. You’ll want to keep on reading but if I was you, I’d pop open a Skyscanner tab now and start searching for your flights because this is one country you do not want to miss. Sri Lanka is the new ‘Jenny on the block’ and I can list so many reasons why it should be on everyone’s 2018 travel bucket list. So fuel your wanderlust and book that first flight of the year to the land of endless tea plantations and palm tree dotted beaches. I am certain that you’ll be as hooked as I was. Sri Lankan food is healthy, fresh and so DAMN TASTY. I find myself rating each destination that I travel to based on how much I enjoy the food. Alike most people, I usually get to the two-week mark when I start to crave a home cooked meal and a gigantic green smoothie. Although this was not the case with Sri Lankan food. In fact, I have been searching long and far for a decent Sri Lankan restaurant […]

Soph’s travel diary: Hong Kong

by sophie.m.spencer@gmail.com @ Adventures of Soph

Hong Kong is the true reason why you can’t judge a place by its cover or first impressions. I first went to Hong Kong when I was young and I mean reeeeal young. I was 7 years old and all I can remember was pretty much eating McDonalds for breakfast, lunch and dinner to avoid accidently picking a meal that had shark, dog or some unknown animal part in it. Okay, that’s a bit of an overkill, but being young, naïve and chucking unnecessary tantrums, Hong Kong did not leave a positive impression on me. I went back again in 2010 on a school dancing trip before heading to the Macau International Dance Festival and you guessed it…I was not a fan for very similar reasons. So it seems crazy that out of all the places that I want to see the in the world, that I decided to head back to Hong Kong to give it another crack, third time lucky right? Why did I go back? My high school best friend, Sophie moved to Hong Kong in 2016 so the main incentive behind the trip was to catch up and explore her new home together. Unfortunately, I fell […]

Cycling in Hochiminh Trail

by cyclingvietnam @ Cycling Vietnam, biking and cycle holiday in Vietnam

Cycling in Hochiminh trail- 9 days The Ho Chi Minh trail was a logistical system that ran from the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam) to the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) through the neighboring kingdoms of Laos and Cambodia. The system provided support, in the form of manpower and materiel, to the National Front for the Liberation of South Vietnam, or derogatively, Vietcong, and the People’s Army of Vietnam (PAVN), or North Vietnamese Army, during the Vietnam War (1955–1975). The trail was not a single route, but rather a complex maze of truck routes, paths for foot and bicycle traffic, and river transportation systems. The name, taken from North Vietnamese president Ho Chi Minh. Now day Ho Chi Minh Road or Ho Chi Minh Highway (Vietnamese language: Đường Hồ Chí Minh) is a highway in Vietnam. It runs from the north to the south of Vietnam, west of National Road 1A. The highway was named after Hồ Chí Minh. The route roughly coincides with the Ho Chi Minh Trail during the Vietnam War. It is a two-lane highway and is planned for 8-lane highway and will connect Cao Bang Province by the Sino-Vietnamese border to Ca Mau Province with [...]
