Tips For Driving The Apache Trail In Arizona

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Planes, trains, boats, buses. We’ve traveled to a lot of places in a lot of different ways, but my favorite is still the old fashioned road trip. There’s so much freedom in hopping in your own vehicle and being able to stop whenever and wherever you please. Plus, of the top five ways to get from A to B, it’s the best choice if you happen to be traveling through scenic areas. We’ve been fortunate enough to take some pretty scenic drives over the past few years. (The Scottish Highlands and Western Cornwall are two that come to mind!) And while we were in Arizona visiting family for Christmas last year, we got the opportunity to take another – the historic Apache Trail drive. THE APACHE TRAIL WHAT IS IT? Historically, the Apache Trail was used as a migration route by the Apaches (hence the name) to travel from their winter homes in the desert lowlands to their summer homes in the mountains. Later, after Anglo-American soldiers and gold-seekers arrived, it became a popular stagecoach route. Today, it is one of Arizona’s most dramatic scenic drives weaving through rugged mountains and alongside sparkling desert lakes and terrifying cliff drop-offs. HOW […]

A Very Merry Christmas In Arizona & Tennessee

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Before we spent Christmas in Arizona last year, my list of countries visited was almost triple that of US States I’d seen. Believe me, I’m not telling you this in an attempt to humble brag about how many countries I’ve been to, because in the grand scheme of things I actually haven’t been to all that many. I’m telling you this so you know just how little I’ve seen of my own country. It’s something that bothers me more and more every year as I continue to see the rest of the world while my home country stays mostly undiscovered. But that’s an entirely different topic for an entirely different day, because today (and the whole month, really) is about Christmas. Last year’s Christmas to be exact. During our years in London, we were only able to make one trip back to the US every year and usually chose to take it over the summer when Lexie’s school break was longer. But as it happened with our move mid-way through the year to Singapore, we were lucky enough to get two trips back in 2016, one in the summer and one for the holidays. It had been three years since […]

8 of the Best Cafes in Hanoi

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

The big cities in Vietnam have a cafe culture that is virtually unknown to the rest of the world. Don’t expect a Chemex of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe with hints of blueberry and strawberry or an Aeropressed Kenyan. You might be able to locate one eventually, but not before tripping over scores of cafes serving up tumblers of coffee so dark it looks like used motor oil and smells like the most intense mocha you’ve ever had. It’s no secret that we love Vietnamese coffee and as a follow up to our very popular Saigon cafes list, we offer a list of some of our favorites in the northern capital city. 4 Amazing Beaches To Visit In Railay, Thailand

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

When I was growing up, only two things mattered to me when we traveled – could I shop there and how close was the beach? (You’re impressed with my teenage self’s deep and varied interests, I can tell.) I’m pleased to tell you my passions in life have expanded a great deal since those early years of travel, and I can’t even remember the last time I went shopping, but I’m not going to lie, I still love a good beach. And so, at least once a year, we go in search of the very best ones. Living here in Southeast Asia, we are spoiled with hundreds (possibly even thousands) of beautiful beaches right at our fingertips. It makes choosing between them all a near-impossible task. (I know, what a predicament.) When, after much research and deliberation, we finally settled on Railay Beach for our Chinese New Year holiday last year, I was fairly certain we were picking one of the very best beach destinations in Thailand…and I wasn’t wrong. Railay blew us away with its beauty and completely chill vibe! Check out our full guide to Railay, Thailand here! While there is more to Railay than just its beaches, […]

25 THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TRAVELING IN THAILAND

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Thailand, with over 26 million foreign entries in 2016, can be a very touristic place to visit. By some accounts, 20% of the Thai GDP is based on tourism (worldwide nations average about 10%). Thailand is often an entry point for all of Asia, a constant revolving door of tourists on short or extended trips. We’re writing this article to help you avoid getting your hand caught in that often dangerous door.

Thailand is a country that can live up to its high expectations and reputation. It really can be paradise. On the other hand, it can be a disappointing place filled with drunken pub crawlers, tourist scams, empty promises and subpar made-for-tourists versions of local dishes. SIEM REAP’S 10 BEST BARS: CLASSY, HIDDEN DIVES JUST OUTSIDE OF ANGKOR

by Steven @ The Hungry Suitcase

Every year I find myself in Siem Reap, Cambodia for a week. It’s inevitable, and always enjoyable.

Angkor Wat is, along with Bagan in Myanmar, one of the two most spectacular temple sites in Asia, if not the world. I’ve come back again and again with friends, or by myself. Although lately I barely spend time in the temples of Angkor Wat, I love the cafe and bar scene of nearby Siem Reap, a charming little French colonial town adjacent to Angkor that now serves as the tourist-amenity center of the region. Though a tourist town, it’s far from a tourist trap. There is something about the clear blue sky, slow clouds and that long twilight that I love here. And, there’s the drinks.

Pub Street is famous here. It is the center of Siem Reap and the fulcrum of activity in ... Read More »

So, why do so many people have such bad experiences and never return to Vietnam?I hope the list I have made below helps out first-time visitors. It may seem cynical and anti-Vietnamese. It’s not. I love this country; I want you to love it, too. I’d just like to alert travelers to beware of the common first-time mistakes that may sour their experience of the local people and the country overall.Do your homework, know what to expect, and this is the most rewarding country in Southeast Asia to explore. Here goes:-1-TAKE YOUR VISA SERIOUSLY, VERY SERIOUSLY INDEEDYes, it seems like common sense, but I have seen tourists turned ... How to Order Coffee in Vietnam Like a Local

by Bill @ The Hungry Suitcase

Vietnam is a country that runs on coffee. There is a cafe on just about every block in Saigon and Hanoi and they’re packed most of the day with a mix of locals leisurely sipping away enjoying the day and others grabbing a quick fix on their way to wherever they’re headed. The cafe culture in Saigon is why it’s one of our favorite cities in the world. To see the list of our favorite Saigon cafes, check out our post on it.

Coffee is brewed differently in Vietnam. It’s sort of a mix between the French press and pourover methods and despite producing great coffee, it’s surprisingly “low tech”. You won’t see any chem-lab looking siphons or giant blown-glass drip towers. Coffee is brewed in a little metal filter called a “phin”. Grounds go in, water goes in, and coffee ... Read More »

8 Easy ways to beat the back-to-work blues

The end of the year brings much fun and excitement. We get to take time away from work, maybe go on holidays, spend time with loved ones, eat our favourite foods and completely disconnect from our day-to-day routine. It’s a much-needed opportunity to rest, recharge and refresh. Sadly, the holidays always come to an end and, sooner or later, we have to go back to work. Coming back to the office after such a great time away, staring down the barrel of another 12 months of work, can be overwhelming. To help you survive your return to the workplace after an epic festive season, here are 8 easy ways you can beat the back-to-work blues. 1. Start planning your next holiday This is my personal favourite suggestion on this list! While there’s a good chance you may not financially be ready to start splashing out money on a holiday post-festive season, that doesn’t mean you can’t start planning. Go to your favourite travel agent and get some brochures for inspiration, set the wallpaper on your phone and computer to your next holiday destination and pin a few photos, postcards or holiday inspiration around your desk. Happy New Year From Singapore!

by Sarah Shumate @ The Wanderblogger

Happy New Year from Singapore! I thought I was going to have something a little more interesting to share with you today, but you know what they say about the best-laid plans… Make them, and a giant monsoon will come through and wreck them all. Okay, maybe that’s not what they say. But that’s what happened. Our plan had been to go down to the Marina Bay area and watch Singapore’s New Year’s Eve fireworks show from across the water. I’d been looking forward to it for months and even knew exactly where I wanted to sit for the best view with the least amount of people. (Gardens by the Bay East, in case you’re curious.) It was going to be just like that time we watched the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London, but without the triple layers of clothing and threat of frostbite. And then the monsoon came through. It arrived with gusto during the night on New Year’s Eve Eve. Waking all of us up with its thunderous arrival, I actually smiled to myself, thinking Oh good, we’ll just get all this pesky rain business out of the way now! But when raindrops were still pelting against […]
