U.S. needs to pay attention to relationship with Britain, Tillerson says

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

U.S. needs to pay attention to relationship with Britain, Tillerson says By William James LONDON (Reuters) - The United States needs to pay attention to its treasured relationship with Britain, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said on Monday just days after Donald Trump cancelled a trip to London citing anger at the sale of an embassy. Trump's cancellation of his trip has raised questions in Britain over the links between Washington and its closest traditional ally in Europe -- widely called the "special relationship". More than a year into his presidency, Trump has yet to visit London and many British voters have promised to protest against a man they see as crude, volatile and opposed to their values on a range of issues. Tillerson, a former Exxon Mobil CEO, met British Prime Minister Theresa May in her Downing Street residence and then held talks with Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson. "We treasure this relationship, and I treasure Boris's relationship with me personally and the work that we do together on these many issues," Tillerson told reporters. "Sometimes we forget about the importance of our own relationship," he said. "We need to pay attention to that relationship and the importance of this relationship on a bilateral basis as well." A pillar of Britain's foreign policy for a century, the special relationship with Washington has taken on added importance as Britain prepares to leave the European Union in 2019. May and Tillerson discussed "continuing depth and breadth" of the special relationship, May's office said. They also touched on one of their most pressing diplomatic challenges: disagreement over the future of a landmark international deal to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions. The deal has been cast into doubt by Trump, but Britain, along with France and Germany, wants to keep it. TREASURED RELATIONSHIP? May was the first foreign leader to visit Trump after his inauguration in January last year, and they were filmed emerging from the White House holding hands. She later said Trump took her hand in a gentlemanly gesture as they walked down a ramp. But British officials have been dismayed by some of Trump's pronouncements, particularly a proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States and most recently when Trump rebuked May on Twitter after she criticised him for retweeting British far-right anti-Islam videos. During May's U.S. trip a year ago, she extended an invitation to Trump to make a formal state visit - which includes pomp, pageantry and a banquet with Queen Elizabeth. The invitation was accepted, but no date for the visit has been set. While in London, Tillerson visited the new $1 billion (£719 million) U.S. embassy. Trump earlier this month criticised the move to new diplomatic premises as part of a bad deal agreed by the administration of Barack Obama. Trump cancelled a trip to London to open the new embassy, saying he did not want to endorse a bad deal agreed by the Obama administration to sell the old one for "peanuts". Tillerson was greeted by U.S. Ambassador Woody Johnson as workers finished planting shrubs in the grounds of the new embassy. America's top diplomat then met some of the marines who are stationed at the embassy. "The embassy actually, is gonna really work," Johnson said. Asked when there would be a ribbon cutting ceremony, Ambassador Johnson said: "At some point we're going to do it, but there's no urgency to that. We'll do it when the time is right." Aerolíneas Argentinas AR 1413 Mendoza-MDZ to Buenos Aires-AEP

by jeffrey @ Weekend Blitz

Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight # AR 1413 Mendoza-MDZ to Buenos Aires-AEP Dept 11:25 am Arrv 1:01 pm

Mendoza is quite a small, mostly domestic, airport. They have a few international flights, but mainly just to Santiago, Chile-SCL, just on the other side of the mountains. Our hotel advised us that arriving appx 1 hour before departure is more than enough time to check-in with bags when traveling to Buenos Aires.

BOOKING

We booked this segment as part of a larger Delta SkyMiles award ticket. Finding and adding Aerolíneas Argentinas award space to a Delta award reservation can be a bit tricky, so check out our guides here: Booking an Awesome Argentina Itinerary with Delta SkyMiles + Other SkyTeam Partners and All about our South American trip to Chile and Argentina: Santiago, Mendoza and Buenos Aires.

CHECK-IN

We arrived right at 10:25 am, one hour in advance, and made our way up to the Aerolíneas Argentinas check-in counter. There were only about 3 people in line with plenty of agents available to help. We handed over our passports and checked our 3 bags without any trouble.

BOARDING

There seem to be very few gates and waiting areas, so they had us wait until the small post-security gate was clear. Once we got on the other side of security, the waiting area was virtually empty:

Boarding, from what I could gather, started with rows 22-15 and then everyone else. This makes total sense: let those in the very back board first which, in theory, should speed up the boarding process.

SEAT

Our aircraft was a Boeing 737-700, in a 3 x 3 configuration with appx 22 rows of 6 across in economy + a 1st class cabin with 2 rows of 2 x 2:

We made it to our seats near the back of the plane:

The plane is noticeably older but still in fine shape with cloth seats. The pitch of the seats seemed quite small. It seemed like tighter legroom than most domestic Delta flights, probably more in line with AirAsia or Spirit Airlines.

The plane was only about 1/2 to 2/3 full with lots of empty seats. This might explain why they had already canceled a few of the flights before us in the morning: cancel one and just move those passengers to the later flight.

Seated by the window and ready to take off!

After a quick safety demonstration, we were airborne!

MEAL SERVICE

The drink and snack service was started promptly upon reaching cruising altitude so as to try and serve everyone on the relatively short flight.

While no choice was given, we were handed snack boxes with mini alfajores, cheese crackers, and another small pastry.

If nothing else, the boxes were cool and celebrated the history of flight and the airline

After a short flight, we began our descent into Buenos Aires.

Touchdown at Aeroparque Jorge Newbery, Buenos Aires!

After deplaning, we rushed off to baggage claim and then into the city to start our few days in Buenos Aires!

Doug Stanhope at Westin Grand Sukhumvit Bangkok – 17 March 2018

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Magners International Comedy Festival in back in Bangkok for its 5th year. In 2018, the largest comedy festival in Asia is bigger and better than ever before. Many international comedians from all over the world will bring laughter to Bangkok this March, alongside US stand-up comedian Doug Stanhope, the most highly anticipated headliner at this year’s comedy line-up. Doug Stanhope will begin his Asia tour in Hong Kong, followed by Singapore, Vietnam and his final showdown in Bangkok. Known for his acerbic wit, fierce intellect and caustic social commentary; fans of comedy and Doug Stanhope can expect an evening of raw, agitated and unflinching comedy from undoubtedly one of the industry’s most original acts. Doug Stanhope’s career in stand-up started 1990. He went on to perform at comedy festivals in Montreal, Aspen, Chicago and Edinburgh, receiving rave reviews and ‘Best Live Performance’ accolades whenever he took to the stage. Today, he is one of the most sought-after comedians and is often compared to comic revolutionaries such as Lenny Bruce, Richard Prior, Sam Kinison and Bill Hicks. "I've never tried to drive my career in any particular direction," says Stanhope. "I've always been an in-the-moment, live-for-today guy. I've never had a goal, and nearly everything I've done has been an accident." It is no accident that Stanhope’s comedic stardom has captured the hearts of audiences and comedians all over the world. He is also no stranger to the likes of Johnny Depp who wrote the forward in Stanhope’s book entitled Digging up Mother, A Love Story. A comedian’s comedian. An impressed Chris Rock said, ”Doug Stanhope is the most dangerous comedian in the world. If we both were fighters I would avoid him at all costs. He's a bad, bad man." And Ricky Gervais tweeted, "Doug Stanhope might be the most important standup working today." News of Stanhope’s Asia Tour has spread even before promotional details were finalised, so much so that when news of his tour went viral, the VIP ticket section in Bangkok has already sold out and its only a matter of time the full show sells out. Tickets are available at selected online ticketing agents. Early bookings are encouraged to avoid disappointment. Matt has had over 15 years of knowledge and experience working in sales, hospitality and events in Singapore. From his involvement with Beerfest Asia and Oktoberfest Asia, Matt has learnt to bring large-scale events to Asia and has put the Magners Comedy Festival on the map. BIO DOUG STANHOPE Doug Stanhope is a stand-up comic. The Worcester, MA-born Stanhope began performing stand-up in1990 in Las Vegas, to amuse co-workers at his dead-end telemarketing job. He made his public debut performing a five-minute set, opening for his boss' cover band. But it would take a few more years for him to find his own creative voice. "When I started, I was just a know-nothing dick-joke guy with a mullet," he recalls. "I was 24 years old, with no point of view and nothing to say. It wasn't until '95 or '96 that I started doing something that felt more like an art form than a centerpiece for a bachelor party. That's when I started to take true stories and craft them so they worked on stage, rather than just telling them in a bar. I stopped making stuff up and I stopped doing jokes that I didn't really believe in, and started working on stuff that I meant” Stanhope's confrontational rants, who's live show was twice named "Best Stand-Up Show" of the year by Time Out New York, encompasses caustic social commentary, outlandish first-person narratives, graphic sex and perversion, sometimes within the same sentence. Fuelled by equal amounts of anger, outrage and alcohol, Stanhope rails against western civilization's slide into apathy and stupidity, always on the edge of implosion yet fully in control and never afraid to risk pissing off his audiences. His comedy is as corrosive as it is hilarious, and his righteous self-immolation is exhilarating and life affirming in its cathartic honesty. His material ranges from true-life graphic perversion to volatile social criticism. Doug is vulgar, opinionated, brutally honest and shockingly uninhibited and is certainly not for everybody. In recent years, Stanhope has won a large and rabidly devoted fan base both in the U.S. and abroad on his own uncompromising terms, bypassing the conventional comedy circuit and most forms of mainstream media exposure. He routinely sells out large theatres in Europe and in Britain.

Prayut ‘not responsible’ for possible poll delay: govt

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Prayut ‘not responsible’ for possible poll delay: govt By KAS CHANWANPEN, PRAPASRI OSATHANON THE NATION Photo : Voravit Pumpuang MOVES to delay the election were under the jurisdiction of the legislative body and should not affect Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s credibility regarding the poll date, senior government officials have said. The planned election date in November – as promised by Prayut during his visit to Washington last year – is appearing less likely as the bill vetting committee under the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is set to amend the MPs election bill, putting off its enforcement for 90 days. The NLA will deliberate the MPs election bill tomorrow and some members have suggested the delay should be 120 days. Prayut yesterday did not mention his previous promise that he would announce the election date midyear and the poll could be expected by November. Prior to the US visit, Prayut had made several other promises on the end of the so-called “road map” and the election, but he has not succeeded in fulfilling them. Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai said he hoped the international community would understand that the possible delay was in the hands of the NLA. “We have to make it clear that lawmaking is under the legislative body and the prime minister is not a member of that body. He is the chief of the executive branch,” Don told reporters yesterday. Don added that he would explain the process to the international community but could not guarantee that they would understand. While the NLA is the rubber stamp of the military junta, Prayut said yesterday he would not overrule the authority of legislature. “I have to be the example, showing that we have to have faith in the Parliament,” he said. “I am confident in the NLA and the Constitution Drafting Commission [CDC]. I’ll never transgress in their work. “Transgression into the system is not good at all. It would make it impossible for people to work,” he said. He also advised people to listen to different opinions and not rely on only a single source. “There are not many groups of people that keep talking about this issue [the election delay],” he said. The election would take place eventually, but when and how would depend on decisions by involved agencies, he said. “Everything follows the Constitution and the road map,” Prayut said. “We all want the country to be peaceful and move forward smoothly. The delay in the enforcement of the MPs election bill will also follow the Constitution.” Influence denied Critics question whether the bill vetting committee has been influenced by the junta in their move to delay the poll. Meanwhile, NLA whip spokesman Jate Siratharanon said yesterday the government had not sent any signals to the legislature regarding the controversial amendment. While debate still persists within the vetting committee, he said he would argue that the 90-day delay was necessary. Considering the ongoing ban on political activities, political parties remain frozen. They could not hold meetings or carry out primary votes to determine election candidates, Jate said. Postponing the enforcement for another 90 days would give political parties time to prepare before the election period, he said. Chief charter writer Meechai Ruchupan yesterday said the delay did not necessarily mean the election would be delayed, but if it was, it should not be longer than two to three months. “The calculation is usually based on the assumption that we use up the maximum time. But if the process can go quicker, then the election can take place sooner,” Meechai said. In a related development, political critics and the Election Commission (EC) have suggested it would be easier if the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) lifted the ban and allowed political activities. Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, a NCPO key member, yesterday said the government might have a different view on the matter and questioned whether the EC had the power to tell the government what to do. The organic bills had not been passed yet “so everyone should calm down. We will surely lift the ban,” Prawit said. Asked whether the government would discuss the issue with the NLA as its image was at stake, Prawit said: “The government has not made any change to the road map. We have not done anything. It’s all [in the hands of] the NLA and the CDC. There are more than 200 legislators, we cannot possibly talk to all of them.” Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/politics/30336985 -- © Copyright The Nation 2018-01-24

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid/File Photo (Reuters) - U.S. singer-songwriter Neil Diamond, one of pop music’s all-time best-selling artists, has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and plans to retire from touring, his official website said on Monday. The onset of the disease has made it difficult for him to travel and perform on a large-scale, a statement on the site said, adding he will be cancelling upcoming concert dates in Australia and New Zealand and offering refunds. “It is with great reluctance and disappointment that I announce my retirement from concert touring. I have been so honored to bring my shows to the public for the past 50 years,” Diamond said in the statement, offering apologies to those who purchased tickets to his upcoming shows. Diamond, known for hits including “Sweet Caroline” and “Cracklin’ Rosie,” said he plans to remain active in song writing and recording. Later this week, Diamond will turn 77 and on Sunday the Recording Academy plans to honor him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. Diamond has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide and 38 of his singles have made it to the Top 40, according to the academy. Grammy-award winner Diamond, a fixture in American pop music since he began recording in the 1960s, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. “My thanks goes out to my loyal and devoted audiences around the world. You will always have my appreciation for your support and encouragement,” Diamond said. “This ride has been ‘so good, so good, so good’ thanks to you,” he said. Simultaneous 90 Day Reports.....????

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

An unusual situation. 16 days before my 90 was due; I mailed in the report registered mail. Tracking only shows it accepted at the PO. It was actually travelling within the same postal code. Three days later, still nothing. I did an online attempt, and it went pending, where five days later it is still pending. Yesterday, I called the CM office and she says she did get my report, all good and will send later this week. I didn't tell her I had an online pending, and would just as soon get the online slip. I called the help line at online reports and she said it takes a week now. Any suggestions? Looks easy enough to cancel the online request. This is my first report on this departure card, but I got a one year extension two months ago. Their system shows my successful online reports from 2016, but I quit using it last year. Anything to avoid going to Promenade. I have another week. Thanks.

Thai women getting scammed

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

So guys we all know Thai women getting scammed from time to time and you all jump on the bandwagon agreeing the deserve it because they scam farangs because of greed and money. But here is a different story I have to tell you. My wife (we are separated for over a year now) but we still talk to each other and go out for meals she visits me at least twice a week. She still buys me certain things (like fruits every week and some times clothes) But to me she is still my wife I still like her we just live apart and no sex anymore () But I found out she has been scammed by a couple of guys in South Africa no no not Nigeria I have solid prove when and where she send money too. Now this scam was not about making or receiving money it was about helping poor families and kids so in other words they ask you to support a certain group, knowing my wife I can understand why she made that mistake But I don't feel easy now because I don't know if it is still goin on and I don't like to tell her that I know about her sending money over to South Africa . And please don't ask me how I got hold of those e-mails I am not a hacker I am to old for that, just by accident I found a couple transfers by a popular money transfer company I have printed some of the e-mails she send and received but she is using WeChat so I don't know if she is still sending. I guess she is not anymore don't ask me again how I got her e-mail conversation. So, last question for you guys how would you feel if you would find out your wife is being scammed and you can't say anything? Sorry for the long post

Thirty Thais stopped at airport from travelling to South Korea to work illegally By The Nation Thirty Thai men and women were stopped from leaving the kingdom on Monday night at Suvarnabhumi Airport after they admitted they intended to go to South Korea to work illegally. Aroon Chaiyarn, chief of the airport's employment office, led Labour Ministry officials to intercept the group at the fourth floor of the departure terminal at 8.30pm. The Thais, aged between 35 and 50 years old, were taken for questioning in response to a tip-off that the group intended to enter South Korea as tourists and go into hiding to illegally work there. Initially, the Thais denied that they plan to work illegally in South Korea and said they simply wanted to visit the country as tourists. They said they had paid their tour firm between Bt20,000 and Bt40,000. However, they admitted the illegal plan after Chaiyan showed them a chat log of their LINE group that he got from an informant that showed they were planning to work in South Korea. Chaiyarn gave them a warning and sent them home without placing a charge. Source: http://www.nationmultimedia.com/detail/breakingnews/30336928 -- © Copyright The Nation 2018-01-23

The story of the Eton educated English lord and the Thai soap queen wows Thais

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

The story of the Eton educated English lord and the Thai soap queen wows Thais Thai social media is abuzz with comment after it was alleged that a rich upper crust English lord is the new love interest of one of Thailand's most enduring soap stars. Thai Rath reported that James Palumbo - the 54 year old mega rich and Eton educated Lord Palumbo of Southwark - is now an item with Kwan Usamanee. Though Kwan, 32, was remaining tight lipped about the affair. The scandal plagued actress who has appeared in countless TV serials went to the computer crimes police in 2015 after someone posted pictures of her allegedly having sex. But that doesn't seem to have deterred filthy rich Palumbo who likes dogs. Palumbo, a businessman and co-founder of The Ministry of Sound Group that has music and nightclub interests, was pictured with his son Alex, 27, in Bangkok. Thai Rath said he had been known to be living in London with a Thai woman named only as "Pim" for three decades. He was listed in a Sunday Times rich-list as having 350 million pounds or around 16 billion baht. The Oxford graduate and former City of London whizz-kid has a long association with Thailand having helped stray dogs in Nakorn Nayok. He is said to have a whippet called Mr Bounce. Thaivisa notes that The Ministry of Sound opened a fancy nightclub in Sukhumvit in the late 1980s/early 1990s that has long since closed. Lord Palumbo who entered Britain's House of Lords in 2013 has never married. He has been instrumental in helping the political party known as the Liberal Democrats in the United Kingdom. Reporting corruption?

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Our Condo has a problem, around 20% of the apartments are bought for speculation, now it seems they cant sell it, they ( condo management) and private owner rent them (weekly based) on ex. AIR... In the beginning there were multiple signs, hangouts, it is not allowed to rent the apartments to tourists. All the signs are now removed instead of a handful tourists, there are 37+ i feel like living in the hotel, no idea who is this new neighbor. We've made a test and tried to check in into the condo via internet app, still working, few apartments still online. We've asked the tourists about the process. The result, is the condo management was properly bribed. To whom we can report those activities? Someone were in a similar situation before?

Shop selling barbecued seahorses at Pattaya Floating Market closed By The Nation Picture: Facebook Sophon The management of the Pattaya Floating Market has closed a shop that was found selling barbecued seahorses to foreign tourists. On Monday, a photo of barbecued seahorses was posted by a Thai Facebook user with a question asking whether the product was legal, leading to an outcry from many other Facebook users. The photo showed that the shop was selling seahorses for Bt150 each. On Tuesday, Manas Meepong, managing director of the floating market, said he had ordered the shop to stop selling the protected marine life and also cancelled its licence effective immediately. The shop was closed and a sign posted that it had been closed for violating the rules of the market. The grilled seahorses were reportedly popular among Chinese tourists. by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Israeli revenge-killing suspects taken for drug tests By Somkiat Raksamun The Nation Surat Thani - Special forces officers on Tuesday accompanied two Israeli murder suspects from a police-station cell in Samui district to have drug tests and physical examinations. Dolev Zuarez and Eyal Bokal were arrested on Sunday at a Bangkok airport for allegedly stabbing to death Mallil, 34, and injuring his girlfriend Rashel Oshana in broad daylight at the popular tourist area of Chaweng Beach. The duo, who were brought back to Surat Thani to face murder charges, were taken to Amper Koh Samui Hospital. Dr Theerasak Wiriyanon, hospital director, said police requested urine and blood tests for both suspects to know whether they had consumed any drugs before allegedly committing the crime. After the tests, they were brought back to the police station for further investigation. Pol Maj-General Angkoon Klaiklueng, the regional tourism police commander, on Monday said police were informed by the Israeli Embassy in Bangkok that the victim had been sentenced by an Israeli court to 20 months in jail for trying to run over both suspects before opening fire on them. The suspects allegedly followed him to Koh Samui to get revenge. They allegedly tried to run him down, and then used a knife to stab him to death. Etihad A380 First Apartment – Flight EY 460 Abu Dhabi-AUH to Melbourne-MEL – Part 2

by jeffrey @ Weekend Blitz

This post is continued from Etihad A380 First Apartment – Flight EY 460 Abu Dhabi-AUH to Melbourne-MEL – Part 1. Check it out to see the first half of the review.

BATHROOM

Proving size was really the theme of the experience, even the bathroom was huge:

I took a quick glimpse of the stairs, just to confirm that we were, in fact, on the 2nd floor:

ON-BOARD BAR

Before turning in for the night, we walked around the cabin to explore the on-board bar.

The bar is situated on the top deck of the A380 aircraft, in-between First and Business class:

It was completely empty when we made our way over.

We were a bit dismayed to find that the bar wasn’t stocked as it normally is due to Ramadan, but you can certainly lounge in the area. A flight attendant came over and said that she’d be happy to discreetly make us a drink of our choice in the galley and then bring it in.

The bone-dry bar

The sitting/lounging area was very nice and had seating for 6. We took a few pictures and then headed back to our seats for bed.

THE SEAT – SLEEPING CONVERSION

Having had plenty of food and drinks for one day, we decided it was time to catch a few zzzzs. The flight attendant swiftly converted the suite to sleeping mode while we got ready for bed in the bathroom.

We returned to find the sofa portion of the seat folded down and nicely made up with comfortable sheets and pillows. One of the coolest parts is that, if the divider between the apartments is lowered, our beds were basically touching, so we had the illusion of sleeping in the same bed, which is a nice option if you’re traveling together.

While in the bathroom, we took the opportunity to change into the provided pajamas which was the perfect decision before hopping into the lavish bed.

Pajama time!

The bed is huge and is advertised as 6 feet 10 inches long!

SHOWER

About 3.5 hours before departure, the flight attendants realized that I was awake and came by to announce that I could have a shower whenever I wanted. I let her know soon after and she set off to prepare it. If one is offered the opportunity to shower at 6+ miles high in the sky, there is no choice but to take advantage.

The shower area was loaded down with Bergamote amenities:

Here are a few poor quality photos, sorry in advance:

Pretty crazy and surreal to shower in the sky. The bathroom is large enough to change in and there’s a hairdryer stocked there, too, so the shower is a comfortable experience.

INTERNET

After taking a refreshing shower, I enjoyed a cappuccino and did a bit of computer work.

I purchased Internet for the entire flight for $21.95 and found it to be quite fast and very usable! A quick speed test rendered download speeds of ~4.5 Mbps but upload speeds of only 0.17 Mbps, good thing sending emails and browsing the internet mostly relies on the download speed.

The sun was up [...]

Etihad A380 First Apartment – Flight EY 460 Abu Dhabi-AUH to Melbourne-MEL – Part 1

by jeffrey @ Weekend Blitz

After spending a very enjoyable and luxurious 3+ hours in the Etihad Airways Flagship First Class Lounge – Abu Dhabi-AUH, it was time for the main event: The Etihad First Apartment!

BOOKING

We booked this bucket list flight using American Airlines AAdvantage miles for a total of 60,000 miles; this was before a major AAdvantage devaluation and now the flight would cost you 100,000 miles for the one-way route from the “Middle East” region to the “South Pacific” region. Furthermore, since we both have the Barclay AA credit card, we got a 10% rebate, driving the total price down to 54,000 miles + ~$79 in taxes each for the ~$6,300+ flight. We got even more value than that though since we arranged a 23 hours stopover in Melbourne-MEL before continuing on to Townsville, Australia-TSV in Qantas Business Class.

CHECK-IN

We were able to take advantage of the free Etihad Chauffeur Service from the Park Hyatt Dubai to Abu Dhabi International Airport for our Etihad flight.

Our (free!) chauffeur service

The trip took about 1.5 hours total.

The airport has a dedicated First & Business class check-in area.

And so the experience begins!

First Class check-in desks

We left the lounge and made the (extremely) long trek to Gate 61 in Terminal 3, literally the furthest away from the Lounge.

As we approached the gate area, they were doing a secondary document check:

BOARDING

Knowing it would be dark at the time of boarding, we snuck a few pictures before hopping in the lounge:

Etihad A6-APG sitting at the gate

We made our way down (ok, more so really up since we were on top deck) of the long jet bridge to board the flight.

We took a left after boarding to find the First Class cabin:

While I didn’t necessarily need to be shown to my seat since I’d studied it online numerous times and been counting down the days to this moment, a flight attendant escorted us anyway. She showed us to our seats, 3K and 4K:

Of the 9 First Class seats (well, 10 if you include The Residence), there were just 2 other passengers aboard, so 4 of us total.

SEAT

The seat was, well, let me just type a direct quote from McCown as we got settled it: “OMG. There was what I expected and anticipated from reading many, many reviews and then there’s the real thing. And let me just say, OMG.”

The sheer size and space and privacy are unprecedented and staggering.

The big, leather seat is luxurious and makes you feel like you’re visiting your grandfather instead of couped up on a plane.

The couch is perfect for having company over in your apartment. And then switched into a bed when you’re ready to sleep.

I mean, it’s realistically closer to a throne than a seat:

The empty neighboring suite

View from seat 4K

View of IFE and sofa (that converts to a bed)

The actual seat featured a few tactile buttons as well as a touchscreen for a variety of controls.

It was all really a sensory overload. The tiny compartments, sliding doors and gadgets and gizmos [...]

Question about changing from Non-Ed to tourist visa

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Hi everyone, Quick question about a visa situation I have. Currently I am on an ED-visa which will expire on February 25th. I have a ticket booked for home (USA) on March 12. I'd like to be able to be in Thailand from the 25th until I leave on the 12th as I have a wedding to go to in Chiang Mai and a friend is visiting. I'd prefer not to have to do a visa run for a 30-day stamp to Laos or somewhere else after the 25th. Given this, if I leave before my visa expires and do not get a re-entry permit, should I have any issues getting back in on a 30-day tourist stamp? Thanks for the help and let me know if I need to clarify anything.

Who was dead woman found in the bushes at Na Jomtien? - police appeal for help

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Who was dead woman found in the bushes at Na Jomtien? - police appeal for help Picture: Thai Rath Police in Pattaya have appealed for help after the skeletal remains of a woman were found in the Na Jomtien area earlier today. They have not ruled out the possibility of murder. The remains were a skull and large leg and arms bones and part of a torso. Found with the body was a black and red skirt, one canvas right sided shoe and some grey underwear. There were also some ear phones at the scene. The remains were found by a foreign worker out foraging who told his boss. They were located 20 meters off Na Jomtien Soi 2 in a "Krathin" wood. Police said that human hair believed to have been transported by dogs was found near the area of the bones. Police are appealing for relatives of missing women to contact the Na Jomtien station if they believe they know the identity of the victim. They said there was no indication at this stage about the cause of death and they have not ruled out the possibility of murder, reported Thai Rath. The remains were sent to the Police Hospital for detailed forensic examination. Source: Thai Rath -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2018-01-23

Police report from US for O-A visa application

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

I'm currently retired in Mexico. I am considering moving back to the US (Texas) when my current lease runs out for either six months or a year and then moving to Thailand. So I will have time to apply for an O-A and I will go that route if I can. I've lived in Mexico full-time for two years. Prior to moving to Mexico I lived in Washington State for 11 years. My record is completely clean, all the way back, but my concern is that I'll have trouble getting a police report because I won't have been in the US or in Texas long enough, or because of the recent two years when I wasn't in the country. I'm sure the bottom line is I won't know until I try, but I'm happy to hear everyone's opinions and potentially relevant experience anyway.

Extending tourist visa based on marriage

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Here's the situation. I'm living in Finland and my wife is in Bangkok. We are going to have a child in the next few weeks. I applied for a non-O at the embassy in Helsinki, but could not get it because in the Finnish population registry my wife's nationality was marked at "unknown". So I ended with a single entry tourist visa. Looking at my flight dates, total time in Thailand will be a bit over 90 days. I know I can extend TR visa for 30 days, but is it possible to extend TR for 60 days based on marriage? I know I could extend non-O for 60 days, but I'm not sure if I can do the same with tourist visa. Any suggestions on the best way to stay around 100 days in Thailand in this situation? I could fly in and out to a neighboring country, but it seems a bit excessive and would rather avoid that.

I’m almost never certain I’ve done it correctly unless I’ve already been to that country.

Etihad Airways Flagship First Class Lounge – Abu Dhabi-AUH

by jeffrey @ Weekend Blitz

A trip to the Etihad Airways First Class Lounge in Abu Dhabi was the warm-up to the main event: flying the Etihad First Apartment from Abu Dhabi to Melbourne. It was essentially the only reason we had chosen to route from the US to Australia via the Middle East. And a visit to the brand new lounge was nearly as exciting as flying the A380 since our trip was just about 3 weeks after the May 30th grand opening–talk about timing!

As a result, we were purposely very, VERY early arriving at the airport for as much lounge-time as possible before heading to our gate. We checked in quickly and were welcomed into the lounge which is located immediately after going through security.

CHECK-IN/ACCESS

We were greeted at the entrance and, after checking our boarding passes, she ushered us onto an elevator. One of the best parts about this lounge is the exclusivity, access cannot be purchased at the gate and there are very few ways to gain access. Here’s a list of ways in:

Etihad guests of The Residence Etihad First Class guests Etihad Guest Platinum member + 1 guest Etihad Airways Partner airlines platinum members + 1 guest Virgin Australia Velocity Platinum members + 1 guest

First thoughts: the lounge is absolutely huge! It is apparently nearly 1,700 sq m (18,000+ sq ft) and has more than 16 “zones”, i.e. distinct areas that help break up the lounge and make it feel very private, even if you’re one of 100 guests.

FOOD & DINING

After arriving in the lounge, we kept up with the standard procedure of our trip thus far: eating a meal while not hungry in the least. A server showed us to a nice window seat and we began the quite elaborate dining process. In fact, I imagine this is how most people kill their limited time in the lounge. Our start-to-stop dining experience was nearly 1.5 hours.

–> FULL-SERVICE DINING

The full-service dining area was enormous

Full-service dining area

Views of…mainly construction + a few airplanes

Our server didn’t have to do too much arm twisting to convince us to try the 5-course Emirates Palace tasting menu.

Emirates Palace Dining Menu

The multi-course feast consisted of the following: starter (dates), foie gras de terrine (a course that we added from the a la carte menu), soup, scallops, lamb and then a great dessert.

The first course was a simple date filled with yogurt and crumbled pistachio. The sweet and delicious snack definitely left us wanting more.

Dates with Chami: fresh dates with local homemade yogurt

We added on a course of the Foie Gras Terrine, because, why not?

Foie Gras Terrine: slow-roasted plums, fig and ginger jam with bitter almond tuile

The chicken & barley soup was also good but we didn’t eat it all to save room for the next courses.

Chicken and Barley Soup: rich broth with tender poached pieces of chicken, onion and fresh coriander

The next dish, Scallops Mughrabia was by far the highlight of the meal. Mughrabia is a traditional ingredient in Lebanese cuisine and is essentially a type of [...]

"Most Hated German in Thailand" converts to Islam - hopes new Muslim name will help him sidestep Thai blacklist Serial beggar Benjamin Holst - given the moniker of the Most Hated German in Thailand - has converted to Islam. Now he hopes that his new name - Benjamin Mohamed Drammeh - will help give him a new identity and a chance to get back to Thailand one day. Holst - famous for having a large leg and an appetite for the good life -has found himself blacklisted since he came out with a sob story taking the Thai public's money and spending it on booze and prostitutes in Pattaya. He recently got married in the Gambia, west Africa, but now showed a Thaivisa reporter official confirmation of his conversion to Islam issued by the Kanifing Islamic Court of the Gambia. This came into force in December. Benjamin told Thaivisa exclusively that his attractive new wife is also a Muslim. Asked if he hopes to come back to Thailand one day he said: "With my new name it's more easy". He also stressed that he does not have a girlfriend waiting for him in Thailand. Following his expulsion by the Thai authorities he went searching for a home and even went back to his native Germany for a while. Then he found love in Banjul, the capital of the Gambia. -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2018-01-24

New school director, 51, under fire for ‘intimate relationship’ with schoolgirl, 14

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

New school director, 51, under fire for ‘intimate relationship’ with schoolgirl, 14 By PRASIT TANGPRASERT THE NATION A 51-YEAR-OLD school director accused of having an inappropriate romantic relationship with a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Nakhon Ratchasima’s Bua Yai district has been transferred effective immediately. School director Nathapop Boonthongtho was transferred out of the school to an inactive post pending a disciplinary panel’s investigation. Nathapop did not show up at work this week. If he is found guilty, he will be sacked from the civil service and also face criminal charges, Nakhon Ratchasima Primary Education Service Area Office 6 deputy director Supapongsa Chantharang said yesterday. A Ban Patong Thanoen Samakkee School committee and teachers this week brought the scandal to the media’s attention by producing Line chat messages from the girl’s mobile phone as evidence. That evidence prompted the Nakhon Ratchasima Primary Education Service Area Office 6 to establish a disciplinary panel to investigate the allegation and prepare assistance for the Mathayom 2 student. The office’s Promotion of Educational Provision Group head, Khomkrit Mumthaisong, yesterday led panel members to visit the school to investigate the alleged three-month relationship, which reportedly started shortly after the school director took a position at the school. The committee was expected to gather evidence and report its result to the office’s director within seven days, Supapongsa said. A friend of the victim told the panel that the girl previously had a boyfriend in Mathayom 3, but after Nathapop took the job at the school he had made advances and had an “intimate relationship” with her. The friend said the school director would tell the girl to skip classes to go on trips and stay with him at a resort. The victim had said she was “in love” with Nathapop and he had promised to ask the girl’s family for permission to marry her on February 14, the friend said. In another development, Paiwan Haithong, the leader of a residents’ group calling for Nathapop to be punished, filed a libel complaint against him at Bua Yai Police Station, claiming she had received a threatening phone call from him in which he had made accusations about her son. Hypothectically breaking a contract.

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

My two year contract has severe fines for breaking the contract. At least a months salary- is that normal? I have no intention to break contract but nobody knows what your school will be like and the relationships you will have there. If they were very bad I would still do a year. Could you just leave ( not saying anything) after a year fully paid and would you be allowed back to Thailand as a tourist if so? Or what would be the ramifications for this. As the title states, this is only hypothectically speaking. But knowledge I would like to acquire if anyone can help.

Non B Visa and Work Permit

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Advice / confirmation needed - Non B visa and work permit. 1) I have a Non B Multiple Entry 1 year visa issued by the embassy in my home country. I'm about to quit my job who have provided me with a work permit since i started work here about 7 months ago - I leave the country every 90 days which is a requirement of my visa. I've read a few threads but please can people confirm that as I have a Non B Multiple entry 1 year visa that once my work permit is cancelled I won't have to leave the country immediatley or apply for a 7 day extension and then leave the country. My understanding is as my visa is not an extension of stay visa linked to my work permit then even if my work permit is cancelled then my visa is still valid and I will only have to leave the country when the next 90 day period is up based on the normal visa rules?? 2) I have a new job with a completley different company due to start next month. For the Work Permit, as i'm moving company do i need a brand new work permit or is it possible to get a letter confirming my old employment has finished and then add the new employer details to my current work permit?? Thanks!

12 Years Of Travel: Newquay Cliffs, Cornwall, UK

Singapore City Tour during a 10-Hour Layover

by mccown @ Weekend Blitz

After flying in on Singapore Airlines from Jakarta (Singapore Airlines B777-200 First Class Jakarta-CGK to Singapore-SIN (SQ 953)), we were faced with a 10-hour layover in Singapore and, because we’ve never visited the city before, we took advantage of the layover and popped out of the airport (as impressive as it was) to see as much as we could in the short time.

Because Singapore is a hub, they’ve made sightseeing during a layover very easy! The airport offers free two-hour tours but, since we had more time than that, we opted to DIY and head out on the hop-on, hop-off bus. This gave us the freedom to do things on our own time and see more than the 2-hour free tour, plus Singapore Airlines/Silk Air boarding pass holders receive a 50% discount on bus tickets! We purchased adult tickets for just $19.50 SGD (roughly $14 USD) each once we hopped on a bus.

We knew that our luggage was checked through to our next destination, so we only had our carry-ons. We opted to store most of what we were carrying so we’d have less things to lug around with us all day and found the baggage storage at the airport to be more than adequate. Plus, there’s a storage area in all three terminals, so it’s very convenient no matter where you’re flying in/out (and pretty cheap for just carry-ons since they charge by weight).

Once we were free of everything but the day’s essentials, we headed through customs and right to the metro stop inside the airport (the metro leaves from Terminals 2 and 3).

It takes about an hour to get into the city center from the airport, so be sure to factor traveling time in your layover plan. We got off the metro at City Hall and walked to the nearby bus stop: aptly named City Hall, too.

Once on the Red Line bus, we decided to stay aboard until we found stops that we wanted to explore more, knowing that we’d get to see more stops if we stayed on the bus longer. Here are the stops where we got off for a bit and explored on foot:

Chinatown: having never been to China, Singapore’s Chinatown was as close as we’d get for a while, we figured. It was pretty similar to other Chinatowns we’ve seen, but still very cool to see and different from the rest of the city.

Old Customs House (near the Raffles Hotel): The famous Singapore Sling cocktail was originally concocted at the Raffles Hotel. We headed to the Long Bar Steakhouse in the luxury hotel to try it from the original place. It’ll cost ya, though… just one drink costs close to $30 (!!) but it does come with all-you-can-eat peanuts.  🙂

Note: The Long Bar Steakhouse is closed for renovations with plans to re-open in mid-2018, but you can still try the Singapore Sling at the nearby Bar & Billiard Room.

The grounds of the Raffles Hotel make you feel like you’re in a time machine to the colonial era since it [...]

Japan says trans-Pacific trade pact, without U.S., to be signed in March

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Japan says trans-Pacific trade pact, without U.S., to be signed in March By Kaori Kaneko and Takashi Umekawa FILE PHOTO: Trade ministers and delegates from the remaining members of the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) attend the TPP Ministerial Meeting during the APEC 2017 in Da Nang, Vietnam November 9, 2017. REUTERS/Na Son Nguyen/Pool TOKYO (Reuters) - Eleven countries aiming to forge a new Asia-Pacific trade pact after the United States pulled out of an earlier version will hold a signing ceremony in Chile in March, Japan's economy minister said on Tuesday in a big win for Tokyo. Trade officials from the 11 countries had been meeting in Tokyo to try to resolve rifts including Canada's insistence on protection of its cultural industries such as movies, TV and music. An agreement is a huge plus for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's government, which has been lobbying hard to save the pact, originally called the Trans-Pacific Partnership. U.S. President Donald Trump pulled the United States out of the original 12-nation trade agreement last year. Abe has painted the deal as a spur to growth and reform in Japan and a symbol of commitment to free and multilateral trade at a time when Trump is stressing "America First" policies. Economy Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said that the new agreement, known as the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTTP), or TPP-11, would be an "engine to overcome protectionism" emerging in parts of the world. He also said Japan would explain the importance of the deal to Washington in hopes of persuading it to join. Ministers from the 11 countries including Japan, Australia and Canada had agreed in November on core elements to move ahead without the United States, but demands by countries including Canada for measures to ensure the deal protects jobs have been a sticking point to finalising the agreement. Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull also said last week that the new agreement would leave a door open for eventual U.S. participation. EXCLUSIVE: After living at airport for 3 months, Zimbabwean family has left Thailand

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

EXCLUSIVE: After living at airport for 3 months, Zimbabwean family has left Thailand By Coconuts Bangkok An airport employee posted this viral photo of himself with a gift for one of the airport detainees. Photo: Kanaruj Artt Pornspolt/ Facebook A Zimbabwean family of eight, who had been living at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport for three months, left Thailand yesterday, according to an Immigration Bureau deputy spokesman. The family, which included four children, was stuck in the Bangkok airport after they were barred from boarding their flights to Spain on Oct. 23 because they did not have visas to enter Spain. At the same time, having overstayed their Thai tourist visas, they could not re-enter Thailand and had refused to go back to their country, citing fears for their safety. For three months, the family awaited help from the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and hoped the agency would process their asylum requests and assist them in moving to another country. Lufthansa A350 Business Class – Munich-MUC to Delhi-DEL LH 762

by jeffrey @ Weekend Blitz

After touching down a bit late from our inbound flight from Charlotte, we scurried from Terminal H to L by taking a short train. We were assigned gate L13 and, fortunately, the Lufthansa Lounge was directly across the hall. This allowed us about 45 mins to get showers and freshen up for the next 7-8 hour flight.

BOOKING

We booked this flight using United MileagePlus Miles. We spent a total of 90,000 miles each for the Business Class award, including:

Lufthansa Business Class Charlotte-CLT to Munich-MUC Lufthansa Business Class Munich-MUC to Delhi-DEL Air India Business Class Delhi-DEL to Colombo-CMB United Economy Class Charleston-CHS to Newark-EWR

We purposely switched our flights around to have the opportunity to fly Lufthansa’s first A350 since it was a bit of a novelty and was still basically brand new.

CHECK-IN

Although most of the check-in was performed in Charlotte-CLT the day before, the gate agent was checking visas before boarding and marking boarding passes to help speed up the process later.

Boarding and visa check prior to boarding

LH D-AIXA waiting at the gate

BOARDING

Boarding was, as I’m sure we’ll be used to soon once in India, disorganized and very pushy. Quite crazy that people are in such a hurry to get on a plane that isn’t going to leave anyone behind.

Instead of breaking the boarding up by class or zone, they had priority boarding of wheelchairs and babies. But, that’s all the announcements they seemed to make as business class travelers just sort of started going through. Then, people were jumping lines; it was confusing and we didn’t know what to do next. Plus, while the priority boarders were still waiting on the elevator to take them downstairs, the business class travelers were streaming past them to get to the stairs….beating the priority boarders onto the plane. A bit odd…especially since this was Lufthansa.

Business Class boarding area, the calm before the storm of pushy people

Once past the gates, the jet bridge had 2 boarding doors, one for Economy and another for just Business Class (well also for First but the A350 is 3 cabin, not 4).

Rounding the corner, we found the bright, new and clean cabin:

Right after boarding we were offered a welcome drink:

SEAT

We quickly got situated into seats 5A and 5C.

The seats on this A350 are nothing new; it’s the same exact Business Class seat you’ll find on their A330s, A340s, A380s, 747-8s, etc.

It is, by all means, a great product, but it is quickly getting outdated as many other airlines have already switched to an all-aisle access Business Class cabin– that is to say: 1 x 2 x 1 as a seating configuration. Lufthansa, by contrast, has installed their standard (and relatively new) 2 x 2 x 2 seating configuration on this brand new plane.

Here’s the seating chart from Lufthansa’s A350s:

The Business class section (split up by a galley and lavatories) has 8 rows x 6 seats for a total of 48 seats.

And, here’s the seating chart for a bunch of other airlines that have received the A350; all of their cabins feature the 1-2-1 [...]

Foreigner denies killing Rambo the dog in South Pattaya street as top brass cops take interest

by @ Thai Visa Daily Digest

Foreigner denies killing Rambo the dog in South Pattaya street as top brass cops take interest A man accused by a neighbor of killing a favorite dog with an iron bar in the street has given himself up to Pattaya police. The provincial police chief Pol Maj Gen Nanthachart Suphamongkhon and local chief Pol Col Apichai Krobpetch were on hand to interview Mr Rusyamsi, 47, before handing him over to the detective in charge of the case. Nanthachart said it was not a small matter as there was public concern. He promised justice for all though that seems a little late for "Rambo" a ten year old Thai dog that was allegedly beaten to death outside the SK Bee shop. On Saturday a Thai woman called Yotsinee Ariyata, 27, had gone to report the death of the dog along with 85 year old Beppe Parentela, an Italian. The pair feed six or seven soi dogs in the area at different times of the day and noticed that Rambo was missing and another one called Mee had a leg injury. Rambo was found tossed in the trash while Ariyata, a bread shop owner, took Mee to the vet's. They alleged the person responsible was a neighbor and shop owner after a security guard had given them a lead. But Mr Rusyamsri, an Indonesian national, has denied involvement. Thailand has strict laws regarding animal welfare with jail terms for those convicted of abuse. Source: http://www.pattayanews.com/content/23367 -- © Copyright Thai Visa News 2018-1-23
