SUNSET BOULEVARD - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

For a show that pivots around the intoxicating allure of the golden age of Hollywood, Sunset Boulevard deserves immediate kudos for so enthrallingly recapturing that essence of the silver screen on the stage. Like the fabled cinematic epics of its era, this is an extravagant, opulent delight of a touring production, one that surpasses the majority of its contemporaries in both ambition and execution, not least of all owing to the full, 14-piece orchestra that bring one of Lloyd-Webber’s most majestic scores to life to stunning effect.

EVITA - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Throw the question of which Andrew Lloyd Webber musical is his best offering into a ring of theatre enthusiasts, and you’d best brace yourself for tempers, if not outright violence. Even pushing aside the naysaying hipsters and Lin-Manuel obsessives, a consensus would be an unlikely thing to reach. For some, the irrepressible character and vignetted charm of Cats would claw out the competition, and in fairness there’s always an argument to be made for ‘Memory’ being his most iconic standard, whilst Phantom and Jesus have fans by the droves. Sunset Boulevard has enjoyed a renaissance of late, thanks in no small part to Glenn Close’s triumphant return to the role of Norma Desmond, and you’ll always have a merry handful of Love Never Dies or Starlight Express defenders.

LA CAGE AUX FOLLES - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Despite only arriving as relatively recently as the early 1980’s, La Cage Aux Folles was a show decidedly ahead of it’s time. Sure, the early genesis of some of Harvey Fierstein’s later outings can be felt in this, his first major foray into musicals - few will be surprised to learn the likes of say, Kinky Boots, sprung from the same pen. But whereas Boots strutted into a mainstream already percolated with the likes of RuPaul’s Drag Race and Fierstein’s own Edna matriarch in Hairspray, amongst others, La Cage shimmered into focus at a very time. The depiction of a gay couple having raised a child and there being a degree of normality and authenticity to their years together was a relatively new and daring through-line for a mainstream musical at the time, and it sadly was not without its critics and deriders.

Alison Rowat's TV review: Monty Don's Paradise Gardens, Britannia, Millionaires' Ex-Wives Club, Derry Girls, The Coronation

by @ HeraldScotland | Arts & Ents

WHEN I was a lass learning the gardening trade (cue Hovis music and sepia tint), the only shows on television catering for the green-fingered were Gardeners’ World and, my favourite, The Beechgrove Garden. Beechgrove had a fraction of the GW budget but twice the charm, with excitement erupting over the smallest things, like a dormant plant coming into bud, or Jim wearing his cap at a particularly jaunty angle.  Now gardening shows have gone fancy, all fur coat and no tomato plants. They must have a concept, ideally involve lots of foreign travel and don’t forget the accompanying coffee table book. Monty Don’s Paradise Gardens (BBC2, Friday, 9pm) ticked the boxes. In the first of a two-part series, our man in a blue linen suit travelled to Spain, Morocco and beyond to see the kind of gardens first told of in the Koran. Built around water, these oases, with their fragrant fruits and blooms, offer shade and tranquillity in blisteringly hot environments. As promised, they were spectacular.  The real coup was getting camaras into Iran, a country notoriously hostile to foreign media. You would not have known this from the programme, which kept everything strictly gardening business. Probably wise.  In Britannia (Sky Atlantic) the invading Romans proved infinitely less courteous than our Monty. On the eve of the assault, the commander (David Morrissey) was confronted with deserters snivelling about how terrified they were of coming to the home of demons, mysticism and, oh yes, “giant squid”. Never mind an axe splitting your skull, watch out for the seafood.  Created by screenwriting notables Jez and Tom Butterworth, lavishly shot and peppered with sex and scheming, Britannia is aimed squarely at the Game of Thrones crowd, but it has an engaging eccentricity of its own, as shown in the choice of opening and closing song, Donovan’s Hurdy Gurdy Man. What that has to do with AD 43 is anyone’s guess. Perhaps a giant squid would know.  Millionaires’ Ex-Wives Club (BBC2, Wednesday, 9pm) was a documentary looking at how the other half live during and after divorce. With only two case studies it wasn’t a very big club, but we got the gist of the matter. Lisa was the ex-wife of former Radio One DJ  “Ooh” Gary Davies. They were still friends; it was her second marriage that ended in a court scrap when she sought a settlement of £125 million. In the end she walked away with £15m.  Being independently wealthy, Lisa could afford the £900-an-hour London lawyers who operate in this field. Not so Michelle Young, once married to Scot Young, a property tycoon who had, the narrator told us, grown up in “a Dundee tenement block”. Young has not seen a penny of the £26m she was awarded, her husband claiming he had lost everything in a Russian property deal. Her court fight has left her £17m in debt. Despite this, and her ex-husband’s death in 2014, she is still fighting on. It was a riveting film, but one filled with sadness, anger and regret. Had it been a membership drive for the titular club, I don’t imagine there were any takers.  Everyone, including the dogs in the street (as they say in Northern Ireland), had been telling me how fabulous Derry Girls (Channel 4, Thursday, 10pm) was. Like DJ Gary Davies I am open to requests, so I tuned in to find that everyone was right. I hate it when that happens. Set during the Troubles, the tale of four gal pals and one (English) boy is a tad Grange Hill meets Father Ted by way of The Inbetweeners, but Lisa McGee’s creation goes its own delightfully warped way. We’re only halfway through the first series but Channel 4 has commissioned  another. That was probably something else the dogs in the street knew before me.  Even I could tell what was going on in The Coronation (BBC1, Sunday, 8pm). The Queen, we were told, was talking for the first time on TV about the events of June 2, 1953. A moment later we were told this again, and then again. Calm down, dears. The Queen was endearingly pithy as she talked viewers through the crown jewels. Watching the film of the coronation, interviewer-cum-gentle-prompter Alastair Bruce remarked how everyone seemed to know what they were doing. “They jolly well should have done, the number of rehearsals we had,” said the Queen.  Then there were the four pearls to be found on the imperial state crown. Two belonged to Mary, Queen of Scots, and were bought by Elizabeth I after Mary’s execution. “They don’t look very happy,” the Queen observed of the deathly pale droplets. One imagines Mary felt much the same.

THE WOMAN IN BLACK - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Horror on stage is scarcely akin to that which we see on the silver screen, and perhaps rarely is this more apparent than with The Woman in Black. Where the 2012 Hollywood adaptation, fronted by Daniel Radcliffe, posited itself as a straight-up haunted house fable, this stage production (which preceded it) is a much savvier affair.

GREASE - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

There’s no real secret ingredient, and there shouldn’t really be too much difficulty, in getting the likes of 'Grease' right. It rides into town on a wave of nostalgia as the kind of accessible, pulpy musical many of us grew up on, peppered with memorable tunes that have long since been memorised by ill-advised karaoke jaunts, and fun characters that rarely manage to step out of the shadow of, say, the iconic John Travolta and Olivia Newton John.

Why the Bard still matters

by @ HeraldScotland | Arts & Ents

THESE days Burns isn't just a bard, he's a brand. Back in 2003 the World Bank estimated that Robert Burns boosted the Scottish economy by £157 million. SNP MSP Joan McAlpine, who wants the value-added figure of the Bard's financial benefits to Scotland updated, says Burns the brand helps promote Scotland’s exports and trade links "around the globe". The Burns brand, she says, creates a year-round tourism industry, and the The Centre for Robert Burns Studies at Glasgow University is an "income generator and job creator – with students from all over the world". From Burns suppers through to our Burns museums, the bard, she said, was putting money in the nation's coffers. But what is it about Robert Burns? Why does the ploughman poet born in 1759 still matter, today, in 2018?

THE COMMITMENTS - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The Commitments is a show that busies itself with ideas. Based on Roddy Doyle’s novel of the same name (the first in a trilogy, in fact) and the subsequent BAFTA-winning 1991 film adaptation, it’s something of a musical theatre curio. It isn’t based on any real life events, and mercifully carries no self-satisfied whiff of autobiography, and yet, in following a completely fictional formation of a working-class soul band in Dublin in the mid 1980’s, it strangely lacks in narrative.

Galleries: Weaving Ghosts: Lois Walpole, An Lanntair

by @ HeraldScotland | Arts & Ents

IF YOU think about baskets, you probably picture a willow basket. Weaving is synonymous with willow, or so we think. But artist Lois Walpole, whose exhibition Weaving Ghosts opens this weekend at An Lanntair, Stornoway, makes her baskets out of brightly coloured “ghost gear”, the evocative term for fishing gear, lost or discarded and washed up on the beach.

THE WEDDING SINGER - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

The Wedding Singer sets out its stall clearly from the off. As the audience take to their seats, a skewed, oversized video panel treats punters to a selection of decidedly 80s film trailers. The Goonies. Rambo. Back to the Future. Naturally. It’s a very welcome bit of flash and period curiosity, and if it may at first seem to suggest a slightly surreal hybridisation with 1950s drive-ins, a time warping video leap into the first number plants the audience firmly on 80s terra firma.

Acclaimed director Derek Anderson is aiming to revolutionise theatre in Aberdeen

by @ HeraldScotland | Arts & Ents

ABERDEEN Arts Centre can’t get rid of Derek Anderson. This should become clear when the curtain goes up on his production of Stephen Sondheim and George Furth’s musical, Company, next month. Featuring an array of West End musical theatre veterans rarely sighted this far north, Anderson’s third show at Aberdeen Arts Centre, following productions of Cabaret and The Pillowman, marks a prodigal’s return that puts both the director and the venue itself squarely in the spotlight.

New Voices from Celtic Connections: Innes White

by @ HeraldScotland | Arts & Ents

GAELIC speaker and Dingwall native Innes White lives and breathes traditional Scottish music. Despite his youth (he's 23), White is one of the country’s most sought-after instrumentalists, having played guitar, piano and mandolin alongside the likes of Karen Matheson and John McCusker. In his career so far, White has played the Royal Albert Hall and in 2016 was nominated for Instrumentalist of the Year at the Scots Trad Music awards. White’s performance at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall as part of the New Voices programme will see him play his own compositions with a full band.

NATIVITY! THE MUSICAL - Theatre Review (UK Tour)

by @ Stourbridge News | Blogs and reviews

Whilst the theatrical release of 2009’s 'Nativity!' may not have quite set the Box Office alight, the festive Brit-flick has subsequently garnered itself quite the cult Christmastime following in recent years, much akin to how, say, 'Hocus Pocus' found a whole new seasonal life for itself on home video and DVD at Halloween.
